Mario Kart Wii AND ?

My wife wants to buy two games for the Wii this week, And one of them she is thinking about is Mario Kart.

But I have two questions about it that I really cannot find anywhere else.

1) How good is the controlling ( Wii wheel ) ? Is it like Excite Truck ?
2) How is the Online Mulitplayer ? Is there any lag like talked about on Brawl ? Althought on Brawl I don't get lag.

I think the second game we may pick up is Metroid Prime Corruption. But this one is good, need no explanation there.

My wife is for some reasoning taking a liking to Wii Play. I know its a lot of mini games. But exactly how good are they ? I am sure some of you guys here have played it.

She likes this sort of thing, as she also loves Wii Sports.

Any info ?

Wii wheel works well. I play on a 15/2 connection at home and have minimal lag when playing in region.

I've never played Excite Truck, so I can't say. But I will tell you that my girlfriend, who previously refused to play 3D console games, absolutely loves MKWii and insists on using the wheel when she plays. Sometimes it can be challenging, but she has a lot of fun with it and is not by any means much of a gamer. I haven't used the wheel as much, but I thought it controlled well enough.

I have been impressed with online multiplayer. I've experienced no lag and have played with people from around the world. I thought for sure I would get owned when I first tried it, because usually with games like this people know all kinds of tricks and glitches, but I think it's actually more enjoyable than single player because there isn't an absurd amount of rubber banding and shell rape like there is from the CPU players.

Yes, there is no point is actually racing in MK Wii, because the CPU players all seem to get blue spikey homing shells on the last lap. It is an exercise in frustration. IMO the Wii wheel is a nice gimmick, but the game controls much better with the Wiimote/Nunchuck combination. I'd actually buy a couple of Gamecube controllers and pick up a copy of Mario Kart Double Dash for the Gamecube system, since the Wii will play Gamecube games and all. Double Dash is the best MK IMHO.

Yes, I know its a Gamecube controller. Especially since I use it playing Metroid Prime. I was asking if it works with the Wii with the sensor thing that needs plugged in to the controller port. Which is does, I just did it.

I played it a couple weeks ago for about 2 hours with a friend. It's ok. The wheel is definitely sensitive and takes some getting use to. The last Mario Kart I played was for N64, and I found the Wii version to be a little harder with the use of a wheel, notably on the Rainbow track, where in the Wii version there aren't many walls helping you to stay on track and I flew off track and out into space several times. The other problem with the Wii version, is that they have a team mode, where you can team up with buddies and play against the AI. The AI is exceptionally hard to beat in this mode.

You can customize the difficulty of the race and AI when you're setting up the 2/3/4 player races. I don't recall off the top of my head which screen it is, but there's an icon in the upper right you have to select which will allow you to adjust these settings (e.g. 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, or AI Easy, Medium, Hard, etc.)

It's the worst of the series.

The Wii wheel is satisfactory, but precise maneuvers can be a pain in it. Also, I don't like that you have to shake to do flips.

I haven't played any online, so I can't comment on that.

Still, I think it is a game that your wife and you could enjoy tremendously, especially if she's new to the series.

It's hella fun, but MK64 is still the best of the series. I will always love that game.

Thanks for the replies guys. Were going to pick it up without a doubt now :)

And to be honest, the last Mario Kart I have played, was on the Super Nintendo. And my wife has never played any in the series.

For online play, it's a blast if you have friends who also have Wii and MK. The wheel works well, but takes practice to transfer what you do with the wheel to what's happening on the screen.

Online play is great. i havent seen any lag at all.

BUT I am not impressed with the game much at all. 16 new tracks and 16 old tracks. And as others said the AI fricken cheats and is crap.

I used to love MK64 but now that I've played it again, the controls feel sluggish and the physics seem very "loose" and "unresponsive".

The best Mario Kart I have ever played is Mario Kart DS.

it's N64 :p

I just played Mario Kart Wii today, and I don't know what to think. Me, my all time favorites are Mario Kart on SNES and N64, all others just don't do it for me. The GameCube version did very much feel like a fancier version of N64, but I only played it once, and was before I got back into being a raving Mario Kart lunatic with my buddies from school.

I really wasn't much of a fan of the new tracks, and Rainbow Road is insanity to a new level.

All the new items, and the rate the last players get the items of doom, just annoy me. Maybe because I'm too caught up in the past and love the simplicity but challenge of the classic games. Well, the challenge is playing real people who are just as great, but the computer players don't put up much of a fight. On the Wii version, they are insane. But yeah, I definitely loved the re-doing of the classic tracks. Made the N64 Bowser's Castle level so much more awesome! Although I love that level to begin with. :)

When I had my Wii, I only bought it for the controller. Figured I might as well spend the extra $10 to have another disc in my collection. Unfortunately, I figured out later that I wasted $10.

OP is well worth the $10 premium on top of the cost of the controller. The tank game is a fantastic modern rendition of the Atari game Combat (my favorite Atari game); it could have been so much better though if it weren't the exact same experience every time you play it.
