mario kart DS question

How do I get the boost at the start of each race? I keep trying to hit the gas right when the final beep is on but that doesnt seem to work. When do I need to mash the gas button to get the boost?

You have to press and start holding it in between the 2 and 1 on the countdown, you just have to get a feel for it. After you do, you'll get it every time.

press the down direction on the d-pad while you fire

not really, but I do try to slow down to include the 2nd and/or 3rd place guy in the blast radius so i don't get overtaken

Sometimes if you can hit the powerslide right when the shell is about to hit, you can scoot it fast enough to beat it. Tricky as hell though.

i read somewhere about tossing bombs backwards to blow up the blue shell as it hunts you down. i've never tried it or seen it myself though so i have no idea if it actually works. plus it seems unlikely to get a bomb item when you are in first place.

Hold R1 and furiously alternate between left and right on the dpad.
