Mario Cuomo, former New York governor, dies at 82

Former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo died Thursday according to his son Chris Cuomo, host of CNN's "New Day."

Mario Cuomo had been hospitalized recently to treat a heart condition. He was 82.

He passed away at home, shortly before 5 p.m. ET.

Cuomo was New York's governor for three terms from 1983 to 1995

In 1993, Cuomo passed up the opportunity to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, choosing instead to run for a fourth term as governor. He lost in 1994.

George Stephanopoulos wrote in 1999 that Clinton came within 15 minutes of nominating Cuomo before the latter pre-emptively rejected the post.[22]

Mario Cuomo was a horrible governor, but at least wasn't borne of nepotism or a menace to society like his son. RIP
