This has proably been run before, but the marines were sentenced today. Everyone is up in arms saying that what they did was wrong and doubly so because our soilders overseas do not have the basic armor they need.

I think that we are missing the point. Is what they did wrong? YES, no doubt about it.
Is it more wrong because of the state of our forces over seas? NO

The troops were not supplied the body armor they needed when they were shipped out. More and more you see family members and NPO's raising funds to send armor to the troops. But were are most of the family members buying the armor you say? Why off of the internet of course. Where is the armor on the internet coming from? Read the article above.

Let me lay this out.
1. Military doesnt equip troops properly because of lack of gear
2. Troops die overseas because of no body armor
3. Family Members turn to the internet to buy their own for troops
4. Blackmarket in Body armor surfaces due to new need for third-party armor
5. More Troops get supplied but more is needed
6. Go back to step 2

I think the public should be more outraged that we send our sons and daughters to war and to death, when we dont give them the basic tools to keep them alive.

These soilders would not have done any of this if we had done the right thing first.

They were stealing from their fellow Marines to profit for themselves.

They were not trying to protect themselves in combat and/or others.

Wasn't there a thread a couple weeks ago about troops being told they couldn't where non-issued body armor? Which is of course the stupidest thing ever if they're either issuing poor quality armor or none at all.

Chumps like that will eat it bad. The brig these guys will spend time in will make Gitmo seem like a carnival cruise.

As for the "rumors" that troops in Iraq dont have body armor, is total BS, the govt has dropped so much money on body armor the past few years its crazy. Hell my unit just got upgraded to all new armor, and our last gear was less than 2 years old. We got new helmets too, lighter and stronger.

As for the black market "surfaces due to new need for third-party armor " is more BS, the market for military goods has been around a lot longer than the current war. People even get busted for stealing MRE's because the surplus stores will pay $12-$20 a case for them. i doubt families are buying MRE's on ebay or at surplus stores and shipping them to Iraq.

I no expert on the U.S military, but I hope we learn that this should never be an issue to begin with next time we go to war.

We have the capability both militarily and financially to equip our soldiers to boot. I don't know what kind of politics are behind that, but we should not even think for a SECOND that some troops may require body armor and some may not. If we have the capability to give everyone a damn gun, give them all protective gear as well. IMHO its just as important.

Nothing about selling them; Read the couint - EXPORTING - big difference
