At their peak in October 2008, an estimated 25,000 Marines were in Iraq, mostly in the country's western Anbar province. Now only about 4,000 remain. They, too, will be gone shortly after the Marines officially hand over responsibility to the Army on Saturday.

<CROSSES FINGERS> Can we be so lucky?!?!

This seems to me to be good news no matter how you look at it.

Once the hard work is done and the Army grunts and beancounters can handle it then the Marines can go on to the next hard/dangerous job.

Pssh..they are all mostly pointless for a real war.

We have drones, missles, aircraft, subs, ships...we don't need to engage on the ground, we can kill single individuals or neutralize entire nations from the comfort of Washington. ;)

Iraq is but a drop in the bucket. We need to stop the nation-building that Clinton started once and for all. There is no reason we need troops in 130 countries in the world. Bring them ALL home and let the rest of the world be their own people.

If we solely relied on those tools the UN would be in outrage :D:D:D.

Ha - tell me about it. My cousin isn't going back for his 3rd tour in Iraq, he's going to Afghanistan

The local Iraqis in Anbar were beginning to complain about the smell, so this is great news!

I agree that most of them need to be withdrawn and said bases closed. However, I do not have a problem with cost-sharing agreements (ally provides land and about half or more money used for maintaining the troops / bases) for some of our close allies like Japan, South Korea, etc.

Too bad it broke us.

We aren't broken.

If we were, we'd stay in Iraq and fight until death... what a broken person or nation would do.

We're strong, and will respond if/when attacked. We won't go nukes on innocent families, but we will repond to an attack.

There's nothing broken about us.

Don't terrorize us.

It sounds like I am OK in saying that we just repond to terrorists, but I am against that.

Our point, is that we will do whatever it takes to stop you. (Terrorists)

Including waging war on your countries.

We thought that after WW2 also... it took us about a month into another real war to realize how mistaken we had been.

Saddam didn't terrorize us and none of the 9/11 hijackers were from Iraq.

We've learned a lot from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq... and their Governments/peoples have learned.

Other Islamic nations have learned.

Next time, we are not sending soldiers in to battle, for regime change, or any other reason. Next time we are attacking (like terrorists) whom we think our enemies are.
