Exactly. Any combustion product is going to have deleterious effects if for no other reason than the particulates you're inhaling. You may as well be sucking diesel exhaust. OK maybe not that bad but people think oh, well, it's a plant and it's natural so it's ok. Sure. Go stand by a camp fire and inhale that smoke for a while and see how you feel.

In terms of using marijuana medicinally via an oral route like a lozenge or brownie or something like that. I think that's probably safe just like a lot of other herbal remedies are safe and even healthy. But sucking smoke is never going to be a good idea.

is it possible to extract THC and maybe put it in your coffee or OJ?

I suppose so, if you want to ruin the flavor of your coffee or OJ. If I'm going to put anything in those I'd rather put hazelnut in my coffee or use the OJ to make orange cream soda. I've done the latter recently. It's delicious if I may say so myself.

Mj is more complex than people realize. THC is just one component.

With medical marijuana, ingestion methods and treatment goals have changed.

Not everyone is smoking it, and not everyone is looking for the high that THC produces. many join the program looking for non narcotic pain relief (yep, Mj is not a narcotic, shocking...) through CBD

Other parts of the plant can enhance the THC effects as well. there is ton's of info out there.

Yes, there are concentrates. drops under the tongue, edibles, salves, vaporizers...much different now.

It just tastes like vegetable oil, very small marijuana flavour...it's extremely easy to make at home as well

Yeah they have some nice high cbd low thc varieties available that really help while not getting you stoned out of your head, RSO (rick simpson oil/phoenix tears) is the best i've ever had, that stuff has a kick too it unlike anything else i've tried. You just squeeze out about the size of a grain of rice and swallow/dissolve under tongue, the 50/50 cbd/thc mix is extremely strong.

Part of me feels like I need to Google this. The other part of me is worried I might like what I find.

I did google, fearful for what i might encounter. But it is less awful then it seems. I do find the people doing it, huge aholes.

I can't help but think there's political timing to this bit of news. Probably worth checking who sponsored the research.
It's certainly worth noting who sponsored the work and any conflict-of-interests the authors might have, but you should still look at the actual data to see if the conclusions are supported by it. Ask questions: i.e. Is the data high quality? Are the experiments appropriately probing the questions being asked? What do positive results mean in X experiment and what do negative results mean? (they sometimes don't mean the opposite of one another). Also, a conflict of interest or sponsorship doesn't automatically invalidate the results. Just because an industry or a non-profit group gave money to an academic research group doesn't mean they controlled the outcome of the work. They often give simply give money to various research groups and have no control over how the experiments are conducted or interpreted. (And as far as industry scientists go - many of them still do great, highly quality scientific work.)
