I beg to differ. My friend's father's slight mental-weirdness developed into Schitzophrenia, hearing voices, etc. after he smoke 3 times over the period of a week or two.
He thought people might think he was crazy if he developed Tardive Diskinesia (30% risk from the medication back then, the stuff now has much lower risk of developing TD) and couldn't control random arm movements, so he decided to stop taking it.
Divorced my friend's mom, and lives in a homeless shelter now with bibles around him to protect him from "the evil spirits".
Friend's mom couldn't afford to put him through college so he's graduating with debt halfway to six figures (but thankfully it's from a good university and he's got a job lined up, he should be able to pay it down in several years). But anyways, point is story could have gone a lot different. Totally screwed his life up.

Your "friend's dad" sounds like he was a lunatic from the get-go.

Also, how do you know stopping his prescription meds didn't cause the schizophrenia ?

This scratches the surface, it doesn't look into what are the THC types that are problematic for cannabis users. Since the rise of hydroponic "skunk weed" with up 20% THC of the psycho-active type THC, there has been lots of people flipin' out on this black market, commercially produced drug. Currently a pharma-company in Britain is developing an anti-psychotic medication from cannabis plants. It like comparing sudafed (suedo-ephedrine) to crystal meth(ice)!
Australia's leading illicit drug expert supports the case of legalising cannabis for recreational users- like Holland. Me, I don't use it, but I respect other people's right to choose for themselves- I myself like a beer or two now and then.
Alcohol can cause psychosis also, so for me its a divisive argument put covertly forward by the alcohol lobby. The real trouble with cannabis is how can you tax it, if someone chooses to grow a few plants in their backyard?
The greatest issue in mental health I see is people who no longer feel they have any hope of changing their lot in life, same ol' same ol'

Anyone with a mental condition should stay away from mind altering substances like the plague!
Stick to your doctors instructions and you might resolve your illness.
Abstinence from all drugs legal or illicit is the usual advise quality psychiatric doctor will give, stay on your medication, coming off medications abruptly is a great risk of relapsing or even triggering something else.
Maybe the Islamic style of "lowest common denominator" law making would suit you better then a country which chooses it laws visa vie democratic inputs.
If I can't handle it! nobody else should be allowed to have it!- just doesn't cut it with me mate!
Now you have a good wholegrain cereal breakfast and brush your teeth before bedtime and things will improve dramatically! I promise you this friend
