Marijuana stupid commercial... I am tired of blatant errors in reasoning.

Basically, my English teacher taught (and taught well) that any time an argument is supported by an error in reasoning, the argument is flawed and thus wrong. The same thing was taught by my professor in Technical Writing.

Well.. The marijuana commercial comes on and says "One in 3 drivers that were tested positive for drugs tested positive for marijuana. It is more harmful than we all thought."

First of all, one in 3 drivers that were tested positive for drugs... So marijuana is the drug that's abused 90% of the time and it's only responsibe for 33% of the drug-based reckless car wrecks. Sounds like an argument in support of marijuana to me.

Second, if one doesn't drive when they smoke marijuana, then according to their argument, it is not harmful. Good. It is an error in reasoning to declare something harmful when it is only shown to be harmful in a specific instance.

Third, the real data is carefully cropped in favor of their argument. If they would have said "Marijuana is responsible for X% of all car accidents", the percentage would be fairly insignificant compared to alcohol, cell phones, eating while driving, etc.

Also, according to this, "Surveys of fatally injured drivers show that when THC is detected in the blood, alcohol is almost always detected as well."

So basically, using another error in reasoning against their original argument, I will say that anyone against marijuana that has never smoked it is insufficiently educated to form an opinion based on the bias of those that have never smoked it before them. And, to expand upon the errors in reasoning, I will say that all people that believe marijuana should be illegal in the US, a free country, are ignorant of the ideas of freedom.

80 (or whatever) percent of reckless drivers had a penis. It's more dangerous than we thought.

Here's an even better one for ya:

"99.9% of convicted rapists have penises. It's more dangerous than we all thought."

The problem with statistics is that they can be distorted to support any cause you like.

My problem with the "driving" anti-weed commercial wasn't mentioned by brxndxn. To me, it's the most important mistruth espoused in the ad.

Marijuana stays in your blood for up to 3 to 4 weeks. So whether or not you had marijuana in your system does not prove you had consumed it prior to driving. It's this reason that your body cannot be considered a container for drugs, and you wouldn't be able to be busted on account of having DONE the drug. You can of course get a DUI *IF* you show outward signs of intoxication - But as previously stated, a majority of those who have weed in their systems also show levels of alcohol - Levels which would only be present if recently consumed.

So what does all this tell us?

It doesn't tell us marijuana was responsible for 33% of all car accidents. That's simply the implication of their statement, which, taken on the face, is valid. Unfortunately, it's worded so that the implication is stronger than the message which is actually conveyed.

I saw that one tonight, it ended with some comment about "marijuana impars your judgement" Just seems to be yet another scare tactic commercial, pretty much like all the anti drug ones that get shown on tv.

I have absolutely nothing against getting marijuana legalized for all you potheads. I will sign your petitions and I will vote for its legalization. I believe you have the right to use/abuse your body/life in any way, shape or form you wish to. If we can get it legalized I will buy a distributorship and sell it to you at wholesale prices. I will sell it to you even if you are stoned out of your gourd when you come into my store. I will light your bong/pipe for you, I will roll a fatty, stick it between your lips and light it for you. I will kick you in the chest so that you can inhale just one more "toke." I willl give you a handful of chocolate chip cookies and then remind you where you are and why you are there. I will point you in the direction of the door. I will watch you slowly stroll out and get into your ricer. I will wait until you start the engine and crank up your "tunes." As I walk back inside I will note your license number so that I can call the cops and get you busted. I will smile to myself knowing that Bubba is going to have a good time with your butt tonight.

Them's fighting words!;)

No, actually I am just waxing eloquent.:Q In simpler terms, I am running off at the mouth, so to speak.

Honestly, though, my gripe is with the people here and elsewhere who think that weed doesn't have detrimental effects on your life. I'm not comparing booze to pot or anything, just geting griped that some of the teenys here think that smoking dope is just all fun and games.

I'm tired of justifications. Just admit that you like getting stoned and that it doesn't do anything positive for your life other than to make you think you are being witty or philosophical. Just be honest.

<-------been there, done that. I never lied to myself, though.

ok, all anti-drug ads and anti-smoking/drinking ads are flawed in that they assume the users care? How many people do you know drink for those wonderful health benefits we're always NOT hearing about? Exactly. I think it'd be much more effective to market how much you're spending over how fast you're dying, but since a lot of things like smoking ads are funded by the manufacturers....er...

There is always somebody trying to justify getting high on their favorite drug.

The drugs control them. It's only when you can realize that the downside of drug use makes you a victim does it all ring clear.

Ain't nobody got put in jail for being clean.

I just hope I can stop one dude from doing the prison thing.

I don't argue for the legalization of drugs for my own benefit. I have my vices, namely tobacco, alcohol, and caffiene, and personally find drugs repulsive. I think it's sad that there are some people who can't enjoy life without the effects of mind-altering substances.

But then, I drink, smoke, and drink, so who am I to judge?

My argument stems from a personal liberty standpoint. If you go to the corner store, buy a rock of crack, go to your house, and smoke it, are you harming anyone but yourself? Nope. And you have every right in the world to destroy your own life.

The argument from the opposition then takes the form of, "Well, drug users are more likely to abuse family members, kill people in vehicular accidents, and commit crime."

The counter to that, of course, is the fact that alcoholics can abuse family members, kill people in vehicular accidents, and commit crimes. In fact, sober people can and do abuse family members, kill people in vehicular accidents, and commit crimes.

The thing to remember is that each of those acts is in itself a crime, and can therefore be prosecuted. The act of doing drugs, which may or may not be causally related to those acts, shouldn't be the crime. If you use that standard, then alcohol would certainly be illegal, but I don't see any anti-drug oppoents pressing for its criminilization.
