Marijuana = Alcohol in Nevada's eyes

A referendum on Nevada's ballot yesterday called for the exclusive legalization of marijuana. Here's the text of it:

Would allow individuals at least 21 years of age to purchase, possess, use and transport up to one ounce of marijuana. Wholesale sale of marijuana would be subject to state excise taxes; retail sales would be subject to state sales tax. Fifty percent of tax revenue from the sale of marijuana would be used to fund voluntary programs for the prevention and treatment of the abuse of alcohol, tobacco or controlled substances. The other 50 percent would go to the state general fund.

It would, in effect, allow marijuana to be sold in a state-store and be subject to all the taxes that liquor is. However, the initiative failed, only garnering 44% support. The support for it is substantial though, and is this a sign that the government is becoming more and more tolerant to marijuana? Are people also realizing that this whole "war on drugs" thing is a joke?

The war on mj is a joke but not drugs as a whole. I don't want to see meth and crack also being sold in the state store. (a tad overboard I know)

Probably won't matter in the long run. Marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the Feds. Even though Kahleeforneeya legalized "medical marijuana", the feds STILL bust the "pot pharmacies" whenever they can...

I support the legalization of all drugs. As long as people can buy paint thinner from a hardware store they should be allowed to buy anything else, regardless if it can have negative effects on their health.

Why not legalize drugs? It'll save the federal gov't billions by not fighting a war on drugs, generate millions in tax revenue and all of the terrorists selling it would have a much harder time financing their activities!

You don't see the difference between a substance made to get you high and a substance made to remove paint?

I think he's saying paint thinner IS a substance used to get some people high.

Well, if you want to eat shoelaces or use cocaine, go ahead. Won't matter to me either way.

Well, I wasn't actually agreeing with his statement, just explaining what I thought he meant.

Anyway, personally, I would support legalization of marijuana given that we had rules similar to alcohol for its use. Prosecuting and jailing marijuana users is a gross misuse of tax dollars and total waste of time. Would I support legalization of all drugs? Not sure. But I do think the whole war on drugs is an absolute failure and has only created far more problems than it has ever solved.

Just legalize it. People are going to grow it, and people are going to smoke it. I'm just tired of hearing about it, both from the politicians and the morons who think they're awsome because they managed to get a hold of a bag from the old woman down the block who hands it out like Halloween candy.

Only one county went for it - and it was not where the population centers are.

California - keep your illegal vices to yourself.

I agree. Marijuana and meth are very different.

Seems like a good idea to me. But I'm curious, where would the state stores go to get their "wholesale" weed?
