I like tequila, and I like mexican food, so last weekend I went to La Verdad Taqueria by fenway park in boston. Ken oringer is one of the more famous boston chefs, but this is the first one of his resturants I've seen that you can get a meal and a couple drinks for under $100

Normally I don't drink margaritas because they tend to be overly sweet... However, this time around, the bartender convinced me to try one because "they're the tits!" so I laughed and got one.

I was pleasantly surprised, quite an amazing drink. Apparently the difference with theirs is that most margarita places use the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and some sweetener, while theirs is simply 1800 tequila, agave syrup, and lime juice.

Any margarita fans out there who can tell me the "true" margarita recipe? Or your personal way of making them? I think la verdad's recipe was amazing, and plan on buying some agave syrup and attempting to make them myself.

Interesting, I haven't been to La Verdad Taqueria.

I typically have straight Patron Anejo, but I don't mind Patron Silver with Grand Marnier and splash of lime juice. Since I started by sipping tequilas neat, I kind of am picky about the taste of the tequila so I cannot have any of the budget tequilas as their taste just doesn't interest me.

Most restaurants make margaritas the meh way as you mentioned including Cactus Club, TGIF, etc. So, I just typically special order my drinks at the bar, they typically know what's up.

I use some simple syrup + fresh lime juice + tequila + triple sec and they taste fantastic. The key to a good margarita in my book is using fresh REAL lime juice, and not overdoing the sweetness.

A lot of the Mexican-Wannabe restaurants have different kinds of Margaritas and what goes in to them changes as they get pricier. The cheapest of cheap are usually just a little bit of sour mix, some cheap tequila, and lime juice... or a pre-made mix.

The more expensive ones are probably made "from scratch" by the bartender and use more expensive tequila.

I've had some good margaritas before and my opinion is that the mid-range tequila is the best. The cheap stuff makes you wanna load it up with too much sweet stuff and the expensive stuff is too over-powering.

Agave Syrup is really just a replacement for sugar and is generally just regarded as a mostly taste-neutral sweetener, so I'm guessing the bartender just skips the Triple Sec and uses a better quality lime juice.

it takes a while for menu's to load for me too.

And yeah, your recipe is how my mom makes em (loves that cointreau), but they always tasted really sweet to me.

Something about the agave syrup... I don't know what it tastes like plain but it definitely made the drink an A+ for me...

yeah... see the thing that blew my mind is that the drink was only $8, which most boston residents will tell you is damn good compared to some places that'll charge $6.50 for a draft beer...or $12+ for a vodka-redbull

$8-10 is fairly typically for a good/great margarita with "premiums" going for $12.
