Mardi Gras (Whose has been before)

Just wondering who has been to Mardi Gras before and what were your thoughts? when is the best time to go? right on fat tuesday? the weekend before? even that sunday? and also, in your opinion, what is the best place to stay for a college student? age of other guests and cheapest being the most important. Thanks in advance.

also, if I was looking to get a bus that would take us there and back, what should I search for? is charter the correct word?

It's lame. Streets smell like urine because there's no where to pee, it's so crowded you can't move. Unless you've got a boob fetish you're better off experiencing New Orleans another time.

I was in New Orleans for a developers conference in May.
Even then, Bourbon Street was a huge party every night. There were tons of people on the street and in the clubs from about 5pm to 3am or 4am each night.
And every night there were women showing their goods from the balcony. Just not as many.
Only difference between then and what I've seen of Mardi Gras was that there was actually room to walk around without getting crushed. And you could actually squeeze into the bars.
But it still smelled pretty bad.
And the weather was horrendous. 90 degrees at 2am and so humid that you start to sweat as soon as you step outside.

My only advice is don't go in the summer. I think it would be much more pleasant when it's cooler outside.

*note to tourists...there is a New Orleans outside of the French Quarter.

Austin: The best way to do it is to go Friday and leave on Mardi Gras Day (Tuesday). Mardi Gras Day is pretty boring and all the parades are day parades and by that time, you've had enough for the year...so do yourself a favor and avoid (most of) the rush and leave on Mardi Gras day. Do the FQ for a couple of days, then check out St. Charles, where there are more local college students and young families...much tamer, and alot more fun in my opinion. I'm not really sure where's a good hotel to stay at for Mardi Gras since I grew up in NO, but make your reservations early.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me.

i went this year.

it was awesome.

we were lucky and stayed at the hilton.

i recommend you go before fat tuesday (that entire month before fat tuesday is a phat party.

fat tue is suck because it is crowded beyond belief. no one can do crap. it sucks.

go to the redfish grill..AWEOMSE FOOD AND SERVICE!!!!

Make your reservations early. I think it is fun, probably go next year. Definately check out the rest of New Orleans though, not just the French Quarter.

i went there the weekend before Fat Tuesday and it was absolutely INSANE!!!! Well, yeah the streets smell like urine and its incredibly packed but what were you expecting? If you wanted a hip place to club then get outta town. Its definately a spectacle. It's pretty much lively every night and until forever... Sat and Sun night was as wild as I could imagine... so you wont exactly miss Tuesday. Finding a place to stay is gonna be a biggie. It's tough to find vacancies around... even the cheap motels you have to stay in the outside towns like Metarie and stuff. It's absolutely crucial to make a reservation in advance. We stayed cheap the first 2 nights, and for the last night we did 200$/night (per room) that was in the middle of it all (forgot the name)... its nice because you can get absolutely plastered and just walk back to your room...and sleep in comfort, too

thanks for all the tips. sounds like we will be leaving friday night to get there around saturday morning and take off monday morning. anyone got any names of the hotels? also, if I stay outside the french quarter, is it walkable to get there? or do they have cabs/buses?

When I went down I didn't have a hotel room. Didn't end up with one either. Just mooched off other people. Slept in a car, on a bench, in a trailer, under a bridge, etc.

Lotsa fun.

I wouldn't be surprised if you slept in my livingroom. Seriously, I can't count how many Mardi Gras I've woken up with strange people sleeping in my house.

But they weren't strangers after the first night, eh werk?
😉

I was lucky enough to have a native show me around this year. We stayed during the parades at some LA dignitaries' house (Landru?) who are friend's with my girlfriend's family and had a great view of the parades. If you stay for Mardi Gras day, wear a costume! I did I see the street was First & St.Charles.

I saw grown women snatch throws (what the natives call beads) from small children, too much nakedness (I thought I'd never say that), and public acts of indecency that made shop owners in the Quarter shake their heads. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

My gf and I considered going but after we both came clean about our mutual dislike for drunken throngs, exposing ourselves to strangers, and disgusting dirty streets, we tabled the idea. If it wasn't for our mutual love of drunken revelry, it would be easy to pass up....
mmm...drunken revelry....

You should go...just don't go to the French Quarter. Hang out with the locals on St. Charles instead. 🙂

Yeh that's what we talked about. We'll probably do it later in the year when it's more off-season and cooler, too. We were in Orlando in July. And she was in Thailand in June. I don't sweltering heat and humidity, but I think she's had enough of it for one summer haha 😀
