March 2009 phone shopping at Verizon

Hey everyone.

Having sold phones a little over a year ago, I know whatever I do, I'm getting ripped off. That being said, I've been trying to find a phone for multimedia. Specifically, I want to watch Hulu.com and netflix on my cell phone. I'll also probably load some videos onto my microSD card for giggles (DivX and Xvid, mainly).

At the verizon store, I couldn't get hulu to work since both phones said to enable javascript (which I did), then it would say download and install flash 9 (which I had no idea how to do).

I'm leaning towards the Omnia, since it has a 5 megapixel camera that's gotten mainly positive reviews (though it's still poop compared to all the neat stuff the Japanese market gets), and I don't currently own a digital camera. I've always been into film and photography, so having a phone that can double as a decent point and click would be swell.

I was very disappointed that neither the blackberry storm nor the omnia played hulu videos right off the bat... especially since they are both advertised as being great for streaming videos.

Does anyone know if hulu and/or netflix on a new smart phone is possible? If so, could anyone mention their experiences (quality, ease of getting it set up, etc).

The iphone is appealing, but considering the piss poor reviews by consumer reports and being overpriced because it has a neato UI (And a low res camera) on AT&T, it's hard to go that route.

From what I read neither phone supports Hulu. It's very rare that a phone will have full flash capabilities so a standalone app for the phone would be required, which doesn't exist yet.

Let me check on my Storm right now if Hulu works, will edit with results.

Also, love my storm. :)

Oh, enable javascript... :effort:

Ok, enabled javascrpit, easy, then you need to download flash, which you can't.

In short, whoever said it was right, you can't view Hulu because there is no flash compatibility. If/when Opera Mini works on this phone (it does now but not fully featured due to no wheel, should be updated) I'll try again and see...

Since the Omnia is WM based you could download Skyfire and use it for hulu. I don't know it will work with netflix or as I believe it is silverlight based, not flash. Skyfire works pretty well, its what I use for hulu on my Diamond.

I guess I don't see how the iPhone is overpriced in this company - an 8GB iPhone costs the same as a Storm.

My GF has a Storm and I am totally underwhelmed by it. It's thick, ugly, and has an interface that is needlessly complex, combined with a touchscreen that is altogether too hard to use. To each his own I guess. I will say that I strongly advise you to check out the competition, including the iPhone, before picking up either of the Verizon choices. FWIW I always liked Verizon as a carrier - I used them for 7 years - but their phone selection is wanting.

I found skyfire on my own before I saw your reply, boomhower. Is the framerate pretty good?
