LAS VEGAS (AP) — Some runners who participated in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Las Vegas say water passed out during the race made them sick.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that health officials are investigating at least 10 claims of intestinal problems following the Sunday night marathon. They also have posted a survey to pinpoint a possible source for illness complaints that have been posted on Facebook.
Race organizers filled lined buckets or trash cans with hydrant water, which was used to fill cups offered to racers along the course.
Some runners complained that the water tasted odd or unclean.
Race organizers say the hydrant water was tested and found to be safe.
The event drew some 44,000 racers who paid up to $179 to run a half or full marathon.

Back in my summer camp days they would mix the kool-aid for lunch in huge trashcans. I assumed that was the only thing those particular trash cans were used for, though.

Is it really any surprise that a marathoner would get the runs?

I was watching the London Marathon and saw one runner dressed as a chicken and another runner dressed as an egg.

I thought: 'This could be interesting'.

WTF? Water in that line sits there forever, it would take a lot of flushing of the pipe before it was okay to drink. I wonder if those were NEW trash cans, or previously used for trash. If its the former, then they probably drank a lot of toxins released from the trash can, if its the former then well obviously that was just plain stupid.

When I stood gate guard at China Lake some people got sick from the Igloo dispensers. We had to clean them out good with bleach and clean that out with soap. Took all day but it was worth it. After that we put one of those sterilizing tabs in each jug every day.

They also let us wear CamelBaks, which I would think is awesome for runners provided it doesnt flop around on your back.

Trash cans aren't exactly certified "food grade" containers... Aside form possible leaching, that's a lot of surface area to accumulate crud on - before and after filling. Also, $50 says someone washed their hands in there.

Seriously, couldn't just buy bulk bottled water? Oh right, "environmental" bullshit.

In lots of places, water from a fire hydrant is potable water. The issue is probably that the people who served the water did not wash their hands or wear gloves.

It's better for a runner if they don't have to carry the water, less weight.

This is why bikers in Le Tour always use handed out water to dump on their heads, not to drink.

it honestly depends on the event im sure but i helped as a water hander outter for a Danksin's half marathon. We used the large trash cans as well and put new liners in them. We bottled water but poured them into the garbage can (5gallon water jugs mind you not 16 oz bottles). You almost have to do this as you get large groups all at once and all you have time for is to dunk a cup in the water and hold it out and its gone..

All we did precaution wise was wash our hands. but over 2 hours we only washed once so really could have picked up any sort of things from anyone. But many people did have their own water and just dumped it on their heads.

Like Las Vegas has tons of water and theyre not going to recycle the sew-ridge water.

Damn, I know some people play to win, but shitting in your pants to finish a race seems to negate any personal glory or satisfaction that one might gain. BTW, I'm sure Adidas really regrets sponsoring that race.
