I have a machine in the field where the mapped drives disconnect when they want to. When it was disconnected one time i was able to map it by ip and not netbios name.

All the Ip settings are set by DHCP and the rest of the computers there do the same.

I logged onto the local server and the shares are still working and have the correct permissions and the user names connecting are stored on the server for authentication. So we don't have to worry about the "log on as" option.

I am having the similar problem at home. From my server in my apt i can only RDP into gaming machine by using the IP and not the Netbios name. I have made sure that there is a user name and same pw on each machine for the authentication. all the DNS settings are the exact same on both machines. WTH?

This is somewhat normal for microsoft and netbios over TCP. You're in network browser hell and getting out can be difficult without thorougly going through each and every machine to verify a dozen or so settings.

Make sure netbios over TCP is enabled ON EVERY SINGLE MACHINE THAT IS ATTACHED. Just one machine that doesn't have it enabled can cause the entire network and name resolution to not function. Also it can take hours for name resolution to work itself out and rebooting machines just makes it worse.

Netbios over tcpip is on on both machines at home at still the same problem. Windows firewall saying no no to netbios names?
