Mapping a SOHO

Is there any advantage to mapping the individual PC's on a SOHO?.

I have a three PC home network using a Linksys Cable/Dsl Router. We have been able to share files just by using Network Neighborhood and giving Sharing level access when needed or by creating a Shared Temp directory that allows copy and pasting without accessing the entire drive. We use the one broadband connection to access the web but we're considering a web page server to broaden our horizons.

Obviously I'm a FNG when it comes to mapping but any help would be appreciated. 😕

Network Neighborhood can be very flaky. Going ahead and mapping drives that you access often, and checking access this drive next time you logon, can speed things up if nothing else. If NN works for you, then its not a necessity, maybe more of a timesaver. What do you mean by Webpage server?

One thing I don't like about mapped drives is that at logon, if the other PC's that are mapped are not online, then you have to deal with the connect nextime prompt. It also appears to delay the boot time even more, I guess because it's trying to connect. We don't leave our PC's on 24/7 so it's an added hassle with the connect nextime prompt. I've found it's easier to just make a shortcut to the other PC's in NN and place them in a toolbar or on the desktop, but I guess I could do the same for the mapped drive.

Like I said I'm just a FNG, but can't you set up a file server to host your web site ? I'm just a hardware guy so I really don't have any idea what it takes to setup a web page.

I gotcha. Webserver. Webpage server. Same thing. Confused me a bit in the context of the statement. You use your broadband connection but are considering a webserver. Sounded like you were saying your gonna use the server instead of the connection, which didnt make any sense. No worries, and yeah, your right about the errors if you dont have a central file suppository on a file server, instead sharing individual folders on workstations. Shortcuts might be the best bet

I can see the need to map if your part of a large Wan or Lan because of the centralized file server plus those networks are always on so the reconnect prompt is not usually an issue. From a homeowners perspective however, it just seems like a matter of convenience. It's easier to see the mapped drive in the directory tree, instead of digging into NN but by making the shortcuts, that is taken out of the equation.

Thnaks for the help

To make life even easier...create logon scripts to map drives-little more persistent. You could use a Linux box with samba..use apache for you web solution..and you will get a secure environment(with the neccessary configs)!
