Map keyboard shortcuts to open applications

Is it possible to create a keyboard shortcut that will open an app? I see that I can create shortcuts to be used *within* apps, but not to launch.

Sure, just hit CMD+Space and then type the first few letters of the app

You could always use Quiksilver as a quick launch.
