Tonight, I've been listening to the "Duke" album. (Those under 30 years old...just Google on it....) Phil Collins was Genesis' drummer...and he was damn good. Listen to the first cut, "Behind The Lines" for proof. Nothing technically challenging, just tight, odd time signature drumming....very nice.

The next song, "Duchess" starts with a sampled drum beat, but once it cuts to real drumming, he rides the cymbals nicely..real skill.

I guess I'm just lamenting the demise of a great band...and the subsequent rise of a great musician.

Granted he sold out years ago...doing music and voiceovers for Satan....er,.....Disney and such.

Anyway, that's the thread. Take it or leave it. :p

His first solo album was great, much stronger than the last few Genesis albums he did (after it). But after that I think the solo success got to him, and he started churning out the sub-Britney pop pablum. From "The Roof is Leaking" in 1981 to "Invisible Touch" in 1986 was a swift, sad decline.

before Genesis, Collins was in a band called Brand X, really good jazz/ fusion- look for a song called " Don't Make Waves" for an example- he does vocals on this track as well.

EDIT: and yes, Gabriel rules :) ( I am the intruder....)

Peter Gabriel sold his soul to Satan; nobody could possibly be human and be that good. When he left, the evil (or good) that kept Genesis together left with him. Or maybe he signed a sub-lease with Phil Collins...

Phil Collins didn't kill Genesis. Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett quitting the band killed Genesis.

Technically, no, but by that token neither would Steve Hackett be. But Collins was the 2nd long-term drummer, and he was also part of that sort of "golden age" of Genesis, along with Gabriel, Hackett, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks.

Gabriel left in 1975, which began the downfall. He was never "replaced," instead Phil Collins began to sing.
Hackett took his leave in 1977, and was also never "replaced," instead Rutherford took up all of the guitar work.

But those two guys were practically virtuosos and the creative force behind the band. Phil Collins is a great drummer and a great musician in his own right, but without Hackett and Gabriel, Genesis was pretty much bereft of the creative force that was so legendary.
