Hello-

I own a Radeon 8500 I havea few questions that I'm hoping you all can answer:

1. In the Direct 3D settings tab their is an option to "Wait for vertical sync" should I disable or enable this?
2. In the Open GL settings tab their is an option to " Convert 32 bit textures to 16 bit" should that be disabled or enabled?
3. In the Open GL settings tab their is an option to "Enable Page Flipping" what is it and should it be enabled or disabled?
4. What is the Refresh problem? I have seen it mentioned many times. The reason I ask, last night I changed my refresh rate from 60hz to 75 hz on both monitors, well my system got all stupid on me. Their were blending issues, lots of artifacts, and then it would crash XP. Well even changing the refresh rate back to 60 didn't work. I had to do a uninstall of the Radeon drivers, delete the registry keys, and the reinstall them, just to get my system back to normal. So what gives?

Thanks all.

ain wonder radeon here so may be different for you

<< 1. In the Direct 3D settings tab their is an option to "Wait for vertical sync" should I disable or enable this? >>

i leave mine enabled as this seems to help my benchmarks and gaming

<< 2. In the Open GL settings tab their is an option to " Convert 32 bit textures to 16 bit" should that be disabled or enabled? >>

i disable this unless i play at the 1600x1200 etc max resolutions

<< 3. In the Open GL settings tab their is an option to "Enable Page Flipping" what is it and should it be enabled or disabled? >>

i never tested this so i can't help you there but mine is enabled as it is in xp

<< 4. What is the Refresh problem? I have seen it mentioned many times. The reason I ask, last night I changed my refresh rate from 60hz to 75 hz on both monitors >>

the refresh rate is stuck in xp at 60 hz . i have not changed this as it doesn't affect me ie..,
i can change resolutions and refresh with no problems all the way to 120 hz but over that and it messes up as thats the monitors limit
i did have a tweaking program (name?) but it expired that changed this and it may have been the reason it still works for me

hope fully somebody more informed will answer these with 8500 experience;)

the settings i use were tested one by one in 3d 2001 benchmark and are based on my card and my eyes you should probably experiment with the settings one by one and see which you prefer:D

hope this helps

I suggest going over the Rage3D for some specialised ATI help - it you take a look in their ATI Radeon 8500 tech support forum you'll find information about the ATI refresh rate fix and relevant utilities.

Cheers.

Refresh rate problem occurs with ALL video cards in win2k and winxp. It sets the refresh rate during 3D games @ 60Hz and you have to hack it somehow to fix it.

It doesn't happen when on desktop (i.e. 2D) , occurs with all cards and is a OS problem.
