Many people at work with large monitors have no clue on how to effectively use them

They are 22" widescreen monitors. Besides IT almost everyone who has one really don't know how to use them effectively. They just keep one app in full screen and switch back and forth when needed. We've shown them that with the increase screen size you can have several windows opened and spread across the screen but they just go straight back to their old ways.

What's funny is that the people who do know about spreading the windows out are using 15" monitors while the people who don't have 22" monitors.

depends on what you are doing, I needed all 24" of space most of the time along with my laptop monitor to display other things. otherwise I had a bunch of windows opened at once. When I worked on the desk, we all had a bunch of windows open so we can easily see them all.

You rank somewhere between Jerry Seinfeld and my grandfather with dementia as far as observational humor.

i have a 22" widescreen monitor at home and have no desire to put 2 applications opened side by side. none at all.

It took a bit of experimentation to figure out the max usable resolution between this 21" CRT and integrated graphics card... 1792x1344. And I do usually have one app fullscreened, but I can see more code at once this way, and alt-tabbing really isn't much effort.

We have 22" 1920 x 1200 screens here at my office, and there is one guy that has his monitor set to 800 x 600 resolution. He claims that he can't read the monitor when it's at that resolution, no matter how many times I've explained to him that he can change the font sizes.

Maybe they are more effective at tabbing than you are, plus I prefer one open screen to 2 side by side for most apps. It just allows more toolbars to be open in say autocad for instance.

Opening two windows side by side is a bit of a pain, W7 does add capabilities to make that easier...

Some people like to have one thing at a time on the screen to focus on. I usually keep only 2-3 windows open on the screen maximum (not counting "always on top" video or pop out Hulu, if I happen to be watching something), and alt+tab as needed. This is on a 21" fullscreen CRT, though. I need to buy a widescreen monitor, hopefully next week.

Do u ever use programs like WinSplit Revolution. Allows you resize and move windows really quickly. I think its a must-have for anyone using 1 large monitor

Are these 1680 or 1920 pixels wide? I find that 1680 is generally pretty cramped when it comes to having multiple windows open at once..

Who the fuck cares? You sound like an elitist prick trying to tell people how to use their screen right. Let them do what they want with their shit, it's their choice.

Yeah, just don't come asking for a 2nd 24" monitor.

I have 2 22" monitors, sometimes ?I have one program open that uses BOTH monitors. How about that? Of course it After Effects, or Premiere. Just sayin.

Oh, I wish I had a 22". New place I started at today gave me a POS 15" CRT. Holy crap, they stopped making these years ago. The guy next to be has a 17" wide or something (possibly 19" but looks really small). Funny thing is, the system is a C2D that came with Vista before being loaded with the corporate image.

1280x720 is my max res on a 27" widescreen - it was one of the earlier models. I hate cascaded windows and only keep 1 window maximized at a time unless absolutely necessary (like comparing things).

Give the poor guy a break. I'm typing this on a 24" widescreen LCD running at 1152x800, any higher rez and I'd go blind trying to read the damn thing. Yes, my eyesight sucks, and yes, I already have glasses. For me this is as good as it's gonna get, and I'll take it.

Sure, you can change font sizes in Windows but then everything looks like crap. Surfing the web is a chore at higher resolutions because not all webpages adhere to the font sizes I've set, and most are graphics-based anyway, which causes everything to look tiny at high res no matter what I set the damn font size to. Screen resolution on CRTs doesn't matter as much anyway because they don't have a "native" res like LCDs do.

Didn't you get the memo? Bigger monitor size = more important.

This memo was written when memos were distributed via paper, because only the more important people had monitors.

this. i have a 17" laptop and a secondary 22" monitor. i use both, single windows on both screens. alt+tab isnt hard to figure out, and i get to see more info in the program im using at the time. sometimes i use the 2nd for tools, sometimes for previews. sometimes for a completely different program, or a different version to compare. rarely do i need more than 2 windows up at once.
