Many hardware devices - need to backup config, solution?

Long story short, this company - had there sole IT guy just literally walk out (for reasons unknown to me) anyways, no visio, no documentation of the network - he was with the company for 10 years, he WAS the IT guy, anyways beyond labeling the actual hardware devices and the servers - that is all I have to work with.

I been just going to each and every device and getting the configs (had a problem with some extremeware stuff but you guys helped on that) but I got to thinking, is there any tool via SNMP that could do this for me?

before you ask, SNMP is enabled on all the devices here, but I want to work smart, so shoot me some solutions, I also want to document this all for them. So this should be fun...

there is no SNMP MIB to return an entire configuration. if you want to automate this, youll need an SNMP RW string that will execute a copy run tftp command (or the like) to a batch of addresses.

however, if you dont already have a RW string configured, youll just wind up doing more work in the end. in these cases, i usually just copy a macro to the clipboard and start pasting away 🙂

for a REAL solution, look into Extreme EPIcenter and CiscoWorks. both of these products will actively retrieve configurations and archive multiple versions, then again thats just the start...

there is a small program that supports automation of up to 5? devices without paying (iirc). Trying to think of the name, but it's escaping me....Kiwi Cat Tools!

Look into Kiwi cat tools, it supports (iirc) telnet, ssh, and snmp to go send configs to a TFTP server. It's actually a pretty nice little tool.

This program is amazing.

In a totally heterosexual, from one IT guy to another, I love you.

There are 2 x Cisco 1721 Routers (Assuming for Frame Relay) but they are not labeled, how could one find the address without me plugging into the console?

scanner such as angry IP or nmap. look for open telnet / http / https / snmp ports. maybe nmap fingerprinting?

do these routers provider internet connectivity or remote site service? try to traceroute a website or a device on the other end.

Looks like RSS, guessing Frame relay as the serial interface is the only thing gettin action.

if I use angry IP, all those ICMP echos going everywhere won't hinder performance that bad will it?

Why you got to hate me? I thought we had something special. Anyways back to being on topic - this is day 2 at my job, and I am finally starting to get some documentation here going.

Tomorrow, I get to set up 2 3750's though, which will be a nice sidestep - since that is relatively easy and not as munde as documentation....
