Manually Control SpeedStep on 850Mhz Machine

Hello-

My 850Mhz Compaq M700 has Speedstep. When unplugged, the CPU will run at 700Mhz to save power. I would like to run at the lower 700mhz speed even when the laptop is plugged in to reduce heat generation. Is this possible? I'm running WinXP.

Thanks,
CxP

You should be able to set it to "max battery" or some setting like that in the bios. However, I do not think the heat/performance ratio would be worth underclocking your processor. Check the bios. In order to access it if you don't know how, you usually hold a key like f2 during startup. It should say hold "F_" to enter setup before windows xp starts loading. Enter setup and play around it should be under a cattegory such as performance or battery consumption.

Thanks for your feedback. My only options in the bios are to enable or disable the Intel Speedstep technology. Any other ideas?

No dice. I think that program only works with the newer processors out, not my P3 based 850mhz machine. It doesn't even recognize the clock speed correctly...

underclocking won't reduce much power, unless u reduce the voltage that the cpu is getting...that being said the best thing to do is set it to max battery life

I believe that I used it just fine with my 866 P3 based speedstep machine, but that chip might be one gen ahead of yours (it has 512k of on die L2 cache and a 133 bus).
