A six speed has one more gear.

The more gears you have the more likely you are to have one that puts you in your power band at your given speed.

I suggest you learn how to drive a stick before you start contemplating whether to get a 5 speed or a 6 speed.

gear ratios are different between 5 and 6 speeds.. Usually in a 6 speed the gears ratios are closer together so you get better acceleration but the top end speeds are about the same.. Much rather have a 6 speed

There really aren't that many 6 speeds available, pretty much only exotics and a few "attainable" cars.

Ones I can think of:

Camaro / Firebird
Celica GT-S or whatever trim level it's in
Corvette

There are probably more, but the point is that for most people the 5 vs 6 really isn't a debate - There just aren't that many 6's out there.

6 speed is not necessarily faster than a 5 speed. It all depends on the gear ratios. A 6 speed will be faster if the gearing is "deeper" than in a 5 speed. If all 1 thru 5 gear ratios are the same and the manufacturer simply slaps on another overdrive (the 6th gear), the car won't be faster...it will simply let you cruise at a lower RPM and get better fuel economy. It also depends on the powerband of the engine.....high revvin engines like the RSX type S or Celica GTS benefit more from closer gearing beacuse the power band is norrower and you want to keep the car in high RPM.

Anyways...I would say 6 speed is usually better...some cars don't necessarily benefit performancewise from the extra gear, but it sounds cool :p

I would say it entirely depends on what you want, and that in the same sentence also say it really doesn't matter between the two too much...... Usually certain vehicles have it at engine configuration/pricing lvls.

6-speed gearbox suits better for vehicles with tighter powerband (e.g. smaller, high revving engines) or for heavy-duty towing (trucks has even many times more gears). If you have big engine with enough torque avalible from, say, 1500-5000 RPM, you can just as well get away with 3 gears. BTW, having more gears doesn't have to make car faster: changing gears when accelating takes time ;)

The infiniti G35 is 6sp, along with the maxima's, toyota matrix, umm supra twin turbos, thats the only ones that come to my mind right now

I think the Nissan Altima has it too. Or was it the other version?? I'm pretty sure one of the later Nissan models has 6sp. :)

6-speed transmission isn't so rare anymore, even VW Golf GTi can be had with 6-speed gearbox.

The 6 Speed in cars is there more for Gas milage than it is for performance. The Top speed for the Camaro, Firebird, and Corvette comes in their 5th Gear, NOT 6th. The 6th is there for highway driving, gas sipping. That and if you are not going fast enough the trans will lock you out of 2nd, and 3rd. The old 1st to 4th trick. So the 6speed in the F-Body and Corvette is more of a 3 speed in town unless you are kicking someones azz.

But the number of gears is not that inportant for speed, how it is geared is what makes the difference. A good 4 speed will be faster than a bad 6 speed in the same car setup.

But with that sais I would still take a 6 speed in my Corvette. That and most 5 speeds can't take the power of a good motor, that is why the Corvette never had a 5 speed, went from 4, to 4+3, then to the 6 speed.

The 6 spd in my LS1 99 Camaro SS is pretty good on the gas mileage. 28 mpg in 6th with on a 320 hp V8. 6th gear ratio is a low .5. Cuts the RPMs down to around 1.5K at 75 mph. 5th gear is somewhat good with 2.1K at 75 mph. Plenty of room :)

The 2003 Hyundai Elantra also has 6 speed.

That?s why I have a skip shift eliminator. I throw it into second now with the skip shift light staring at me. It's a lot less annoying than being forced into 4th. Damn GM and their fuel saving tricks.
