Depends on area, where I live, rush hour is an extra turn at the stop light, so HELL YES!
If it's in an area like NYC where you stop, move, stop, move several hundred if not thousands of times during a rush hour commute, HELL NO!

If you're one of those jerks who has to drink coffee, talk on the phone and smoke while driving, get an auto and give everyone else a break. Otherwise, get the manual and enjoy driving.

Werd, but nowadays with those SMG type autos they are starting to become popular too...

I live in the Boston area. Drive a manual Passat wagon, which has been my third car in a row with manual. I don't even think about it being manual. I just drive the durn thing.

I drove a manual even when I lived in San Francisco, with no problems. I strongly prefer it, and regretted buying the one automatic car I have ever owned (a Honda Accord EX V-6, which I traded within a year).

You do know the difference is .2-.3 seconds between the two right?

In real life driving, that is negligible. Different drivers get different times. If it was consistently half a second or more, then I would say they are different, but for a an unprofessional driver, i doubt they will be able to see the difference, let alone get 4.6 or 4.8 0 - 60 times.

The difference is actually around .5s from what I have read in the past.

You might be correct about different drivers, but that isn't the issue we're discussing here. You said the auto C5 is faster than the manual C5, which it is not. :)

N8Magic: the different drivers is important to the issue of 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times that consumers like us read. If you read different publications (publications that have in house drivers), you get different times. The drivers that tested these vehicles ususally play around with the vehicles settings to get an optimal time. That is why different drivers and different publications will show different times, again, .2-.3 is negligible. The difference should not be .5 seconds, unless the publication you were reading had a driver that didn't get a good time on the auto flavor of the vehicle.

Refer to the following links:

Auto = 5.0 seconds Manual = 4.8
5.0 Seconds

and where did I say the auto is faster than the manual?

At least with older cars, you can get better mileage from a manual. At this point transmissions have progressed to the point that auto trannies are *smarter* than you are, and you can get better performance with some autos. Driving an auto is more convenient, but you'll probably enjoy the 'sport' of a manual more. You could always opt for a manu-matic that lets you shift on your own when you get that hankerin'.

This morning, when I was showering, I still had testicles.

This morning, when I got in my car, it still had a manual transmission.

My mother drives a standard and she's driven in hours of traffic for a long long time. Puhleeze, traffic is no excuse for being a panzy and not driving standard. :p

JK, lots of people drive auto, I know - but my preference (obviously) is most definitely standard. Both parents drive it, so hence I drive it but I have driven auto before and it seemed pretty bland, boring and just overall a much sh1ttier driving experience. I don't want to fall asleep at the wheel for chrissakes.

Manual is not REQUIRED for Supra if you are looking for speed.. the 98 supra with 5 spd auto will take a manual anyday in drags and highway.. :)

hmm yeah I've heard that some cars with turbos benefit more with an auto than with a manual gearbox.

Ususally, when you get into bigger engines, not just turbos, but engines with 300+ hp, there isn't much of a difference in quarter time or -60 times between the two. But there is no denying the excitement involved when you're shifting at near redline, when YOU'RE in control. If you have a corolla, forget about it, it isn't worth it. But if you have a sports car, or even a sporty car, its just a hell lot more fun to drive.

An auto supra usually has better 1/4 times because the driver brake boosts off the line... :D

You are correct. I'm aware of this too, because I've seen it in person. Dont know why some people are arguing over this *shrugs shoulders*
