Or a cheap old beater + a big parking lot. If you're careful you won't mess anything up, but of course being in traffic while learning makes that tough.

it's not hard. i picked it up in an afternoon. a friend of my dad's took me out in his beater VW fox. i was used to the feel of a clutch from riding dirt bikes.

the hardest part to learn is pulling out while sitting on a hill (going uphill, that is). you really need to get the feel for the clutch and when it starts to grab.

i've always found jeep wranglers to be easy to drive (and learn on) since they have a good bit of torque and you don't need to worry much about giving it throttle.

I learned on a Jeep Wrangler.
Dad took me to a stadium parking lot about 30 minutes away. Took me like 7-10 minutes to get First gear down. After 30 or more minutes of just practicing, I drove back.

Or just be like my brother and decide to borrow the MR2 Spyder from work and learn by yourself on the spot how to do it.

friend's manual, if they're not willing to do it you could do what I was planning on doing to teach my gf.

Find a manual beater car for sale on craigslist, email seller and ask if you can rent it for ~$50 for one day so you can teach someone to drive stick. I"m sure someone on CL will be willing to take the offer ;) I haven't tried this route though.

Geesh, I taught two ex girlfriends how to drive a manual and neither one of them caused any damage at all. You must be amazingly incompetent. Driving a stick isn't that hard, most people can pick it up in less than an hour. They're fine until they get stuck at a red light on a steep hill. Then things can get really funny.

First of all, the car was dying to begin with... A n00b to stick should not have been behind it because it died within the first few minutes of me behind the wheel. It died the second time it stalled.

Second, way to be an asshat. Your E-penis sure the fvck is bigger than mine now.

A couple girls up around where I live tried to teach themselves stick in an afternoon in an OLD mazda protege (no RPM tach, possibly no syncros). I recommend against that.

Best way to learn is find someone who can drive stick and has a beater, and ask for a lesson. Took me about a day to pick it up, and 2-3 days before I could drive anywhere without fearing for my safety.
