Manipulating an XP drive via 7

My neighbor gave me a laptop to work on since the person who worked on it before "messed it up". When I got it i attached the drive to my sig comp and found that EVERY SINGLE FILE was in folder. So I did a Nod32 scan and fixed 6 virus's which was part of the problem. Went to go place the files in their original locations (figured a simple copy and paste) but certain system files are not cooperating. Plus there is a virus in the boot sector but that SHOULDNT be an issue once I get it booted. Trying to figure out how to gain access to those files and move them to their original location so I can install an antivirus and clean the boot sector and give him back his old computer without doing a format clean install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and xp is no longer on this computer. I knew I would regret that...

oh how i hate to admit that i RARELY use dos... always afraid i will screw something up since i haven't used it since windows 3.1 i don't even remember all the commands been meaning to get a book that lists them all and explains them...but if thats my only true option i guess i got some brushing up to do
edit-so as i enter the command prompt with administrator access (from the desktop) i can't change directories...cd and chdir dont do anything...WTF??? this is why i try to stay away from the command prompt
