Manifold is cracked in my honda civic.

Just got my car back from the garage (got my brakes changed), and the check engine light was on so they pluged it into the computer and the code they got was an exhaust problem, turns out the manifold is cracked.

Its a very costly repair (900$ canadian), and they told me they had to get an orginal from honda, that you couldn't buy after market.

Anyways my question is, how long will the manifold last (car has 189 000km on it)? And is there any aftermarket manifolds avaliable for cheaper?

Also my rear shocks are make a sqeeking sound, and they need to be replaced, should i change just the rear or spend a little more and change them all around and not have to worry about it again?

96' Honda Civic LX 4dr.

Thanks

Call up an auto wrecking yard and see if they can find a manifold for a 96 civic i'm sure its not that hard to find.

900 bucks for a new exhaust manifold seems spendy, although that probably includes labor........ I imagine it could be a PITA if you have to yank the engine out.

I'm pretty sure I've seen aftermarket headers on eBay.

if it's an intake mani. you can probably replace it yourself... go to the wreckers and see.
exhaust, not too sure what is best to suggest.... try and find one from the wreckers or buy a DC header or something 😀

Unfortunately, I don't think they make an aftermarket header for the LX. So you'll either have to pony up the money, hit up the junkyards, or ask why they can't weld up the existing one.

I can't see the crack, thats what they told me. You can hear it though under excelleration but hardly. They said they needed to change two sensors along with the manifold.

So my options are getting one at a junk yard, getting them to weld it back together or forking out the cash?

WHat would be my best options for trouble free later on? I want this car to last till 300 000km if possible, and I'm going back to school in september for two years, so the less unexpected repairs I get the better.

Thanks

sorry but I can say for header or exhaust manifold.. all lx, ex or whatever is the same, look at the top.. you can get it cheap in local yard.. probably around 50-100 if I am to get it locally in Honda Heaven yard in san jose.. for intake manifold, it's the same, you just go get it at yard.. I don't think it's worth welding... both can be replaced by yourself easily.. I have intalled a full exhaust system on my integra myself.. probably a 2-3 hours job with proper tools.

I was going to say, what makes the LX so different than say the HX or EX? lol.. As long as they use the same engine..

Basically, it sounds like the crack isn't really a problem.. It's the sensors that are causing the check engine light to come on. They probably just noticed the crack and decided to be nice and replace it for you.. for 900$ of course. 😉

You tell them to find you a used manifold or you will take it to somebody who will.

And no, they do not need to replace the 2 oxygen sensors.

There. I just saved you $500.

.......read his post again, he has a 1996 your link has headers for 1992-1995. After a quick search on a Honda forum, the difference is that in 1996 Honda put 2 O2 sensors on the manifold. Also for the LX the catalytic converter is on the manifold itself, where in previous years and on the EX model the cat is inbetween the manifold and the exhaust. So it won't work simply by buying that header.

Go search the bome yards.

can you see the crack? Can you weld it back together?

Welding cast iron is very difficult to do correctly, you must first heat the manifold to 600 F, weld the crack with high nickel welding rod and then submerge the manifold in heated sand then let cool overnight, if this is not done, the cast iron will crack where the weld is.

i know. However, it is still cheaper than the $900CAD he was quoted.

LX Civics have the 115hp engines, same as the EX Civics (in canada). The Si, adds VTEC and brings the engine up to 127hp.

Thats a about 110 000km or so.. They had a recall on the manifolds and catalytic converter on the civics, it was 8 years or 160 000km or something. You should go get it check out while you still can.

My civic has the 1.6l I4, 103hp engine, and the EX in canada has the V-Tech engine with 127hp.

Actually when my dad did it he welded it cold but he could only weld a litle bit at a time and let it cool to the touch. Can't let them get real hot or else your looking for a new manifold anyways.

my friend's tempo had a 4" crack along the manifold, so we went to canadian tire and got some liquid metal, smothered the crack in it, and so far it's worked pretty well. I would suggest this first before dropping $900 on the car.
