manfrotto monopod suggestion?

I currently have a 486 ball head w/ the RC2 quick release system. I was going to pick up a manfrotto 679-682 (I haven't looked into detail the differences between them).

My question is, for those of you that have used monopods, and suggestions on if a tilt and swivel head is better or a ball head? I heard the latter, but never did look into it much.

I'm trying to figure out if I should just play swapping games with what I have, or just get a decent tilt and swivel for the tripod.

Thanks

I like to use a monopod when travelling. A good sturdy one also serves as a walking stick. As a personal preference, I like the tilt/swivel head. But some of the time I use no head at all - just a direct screw in.

I have been looking at a new monopod - one that has a small tripod that flips out at the bottom so that on occasion, it can stand alone. Without that, I have been known to wedge the monopod into a pile of rocks, etc. for occasional stand alone shots.

I have the 679 and it works really well with the Tilting QR head. I find that the tilting head is essential so you can do the "correct" monopod pose (bracing against your body). It's $50, three segments and quite durable.

Which tilting head do you have? Is it RC2 compatible? That's my main concern, so I can easily use my ball head too if I wanted to. I'm leaning toward the 680 since it's about 10cm shorter when collapsed.

I have the 3229 / 234RC (the same QR plate you currently use).
