I've dabbled with Linux before (Caldera and Mandrake) and I am going to give it a another try. What are the main differences/advantages when comparing Mandrake to Red Hat?

Hmmm, well in my experience there really isn't much of a difference between mandrake and red hat, atleast for most practical reasons. However, Mandrake uses urpmi for package management and usually has more wizard and other things like that. There are probably numerous other differences between the two, but nothing that's really groundbreaking, I'm sure.

It's spelled 'gnome' and RH includes both, I would assume Mandrake does too. But all of Mandrakes tools are written to integrate with KDE and RedHat's tools are written for Gnome, they work in each other but they're not as integrated.

I have a n00b question. Is "gnome" pronounced with the G silent, so it's just "nome" or with the G, like "Gee Nome". For my system, Mandrake seems faster than Redhat. I haven't tried Redhat9, but I use Mandrake 9.1 all the time. Just my $0.02.

Add a penny for your thoughts ;)

Gnome is pronounced with a silent g.

I had these same issues. Then Nothinman and Spyro suggested Debian With APT-GET it is very hard not to like Debian!

Actually it's pronounced with a hard G (gah-nome). http://www.gnome.org/faqs/users-faq/index.html#AEN38
The last time I played with red hat, I didn't like it. The last time I played with Mandrake I did. It really just depends on what you want to use it for, etc.

Well then, in that case I stand corrected.

I'm still going to call it "gnome" with a silent g thought, guh-nome just doesn't roll of my clumsy tounge. :p

Thank you. At work I say..."If it's not on fire, it's a software problem".

DaveR....Nice sig.

Debian is the way to go to get exactly what you want installed. You should also consider SuSe. SuSe is easy to install and easy to learn and is not so bloated as Redhat and Mandrake. I know that you can do a custom install in both distributions but the standard install is just to much stuff.

Just FYI - there is an rpm-based version of apt for RedHat and for Mandrake (check out www.freshrpms.net); rpm -Uvh the apt rpm, type apt-get update, then type apt-get install synaptic (a nice graphical front end for apt) and you'll be able to update anything on your system and see what software is available in the repositories.

Best of all, apt solves dependency problems for you, so there's no more rpm hell!

By the way, the KDE3.1 included in RH9 is much, MUCH better than their RH8 KDE; it's not really crippled anymore.

Debian is pretty cool as well, and I think everyone should be required to give slack a try ;)

I used to use redhat but I've since switched over to gentoo. I much prefer it over redhat or mandrake. Once you get comfortable with linux, I would recommend checking it out. It's more involved, but you have much more control in how you want your system set up.
