Ok so after reading the linux for the noobs thread, I decided I want mandrake.

Questions:

1. How much hard drive space does it take up?
2. Can I run it from a 2nd partition on my Sony Vaio laptop?
3. How would I boot from the 2nd partition?
4. How would I delete Linux if I didn't want it anymore?
5. Can I install all types of programs like Ethereal and Airsnort (examples of programs that run on linux)
6. Will it support my DLink USB Wireless?
7. Will it support my Netgear and Cisco PCMCIA cards?

Isn't it obvious I know nothing about linux and hacking? lol

For the record, this thread is NOT intended to get details about hacking.

1. Not much
2. Yes
3. The boot loader will automatically detect it and ask you for the option to boot into linux or windows
4. I am not sue on this one. You could simply delte the partision but I don't know about the boot loader. Someone else needs to answer this for you
5. I don't knwo what those programs are but there are plenty of free programs for linux and you cna run Windows apps through emulation using Wine but IU dont like usiing it
6. I don't know
7. I don't Know

I hope that helps. I do not know all of your questions but mayube someoen else can answer those ones to help you out.

As much as you want it to. I recommend 10+GB though, just to give yourself some breathing room.

2. Can I run it from a 2nd partition on my Sony Vaio laptop?

You will need two Linux partitions, / and swap. FAT32 and NTFS are not acceptable.

3. How would I boot from the 2nd partition?

LILO or grub, don't worry mandrake should set these up. 😉

4. How would I delete Linux if I didn't want it anymore?

Delete the partitions and format your MBR.

5. Can I install all types of programs like Ethereal and Airsnort (examples of programs that run on linux)

Yes.

6. Will it support my DLink USB Wireless?

Which chipset does that adapter use? You can post the model number (after using google.com/linux) if you don't know.

7. Will it support my Netgear and Cisco PCMCIA cards?

What kind of cards? Firewire? USB? SCSI? Ethernet? WiFi? 😛

Isn't it obvious I know nothing about linux and hacking? lol

There is nothing wrong with hacking. 🙂

Super fast guys! I gotta find out what the warrenty on my laptop is. It's one of the ones with the docking station. I'll probably end up installing XP Pro and Mandrake on it.

Those wireless Netgear and Ciscos are PCMCIA and Prism 2 I believe.

If I do reformat, how much space should I leave for my XP and my Linux? I don't plan on using many programs on linux (just hacking stuff) but other than that, just a few games and some web browsers.

XP Pro will contain my school work and all my other stuff (video isn't good so no games)

The current hard drive is a 30GB 🙂.

The DLink wireless is a 120+ edition.

Prism2 is supported quite well.

I'd leave 5-7GB for Linux, 10GB if you don't plan on doing much in windows.

The dlink might be a prism based adapter, not positive though. I don't feel like googling much at the moment. 😉

theres a rule of thumb, make your swap partition 2x your RAM... or was it 4x?

1.5-2x.

oops, i guess i made my workstation at home with too much swap... oh well.

I don't think too much will really hurt, unless you're desperate for storage space. 😉
