Hi

I am looking at putting mandrake linux 8.2 on a spare PC. Any recommendations you can make as I haven't really touched linux before. Will a P2 300 with 128MB and 4GB HDD be enough

Why Mandrake 8.2? Mandrake 9 is out and it's a stable release as well. I have installed it on a Celeron 700/128MB/i810 machine before and it ran very well. I'm sure it'll be fine on your machine.

Yeah 9 is out, 8.2 is still good though. I'm ran 8.2 and just upgraded to 9 on a K6-2 350 64mb Ram and a 4.3gb hard drive. It actually runs pretty decent. Have fun, Later.

Linux loves ram, and it will work on a much slower machine than what your normal Winblows box would.
Give it a try, I think that Mandrake 9 would work well.

Are any of you using it as a desktop. Or are they firwall, proxy, router, file server etc?

When you install it, what is the best option, the default?

I'm running Mandrake 9 (been running it for about a week now), and I'd recommend you go with the "recommended" install. The installation ran as smooth as silk, and automatically detected all my hardware and nework settings - it even downloaded package updates during the install process!

Mandrake 9 is as close as Linux gets to desktop OS for the masses (for now).
