Mandrake here i come! *help me!*

I'm about to try it and i have no idea what i am doing so we will see what happens 🙂
Hopefully next time i post it will be from a nice and clean Mandrake system 😎

I have no sound nor does my mouse wheel/extra mouse buttons work.
I am also really lost heh

been a great experience and testament to linux's rock hard stability, thus far. Mandrake locked up installing at the "preparing bootloader" stage

no one can help you with your sound problem unless you post some specs.

as for the mouse wheel, open /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as root, find the mouse inputdevice section, and edit it to match this:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" <- this line binds the mouse wheel
EndSection

Can't help you with your "extra" buttons, as I have only used 3 button mice. I know they can be used, but probably not for the same things you're used to.

3.5 hours and you're running back to Windows with your tail between your legs, that must be a new record or something.

That's not bad! Atleast he gave it a try...Im sure next time Maleficus will want to have an experienced user around.

Good luser good! Bad developer bad!

The wheel mouse question is answered on the xfree86 site. The sound problem couldnt be fixed because the genius never gave us enough information to help him. The lockup probably occurred because of crappy hardware or a bad burn.

Im personally glad he is giving Microsoft all the money his parent give him! I dont want to try and support this crap. Like I said in another thread, many of these lusers dont know how to ask a question.

Go back to ATOT and post crap like this there.

Here is my two cents worth.
I installed mandrake on one of my machines about 2 months ago. I am telling you it has been a struggle, I am a hard head and just muddled through all the problems that I had. I am not a programmer or even a very smart person but got it going and really like it. It is so stable that it never crashes.
Part of the fun on linux is the learning process, sure it can be difficult but if I can do it anyone can if they will put in the effort.
I do think that in some respects that there are a lot of ego's that get in the way when arguments start about GUI versions vs command line.
You see I am 68 years old and if I can learn it it has to be pretty simple for you young guys. You give up to easy. Not willing to put any effort into learning.
Bleep

In my experiance nothing that was ever worth doing was ever easy.

Running back to windows after such little effort is like going back to baby food because your steak just takes to much effort to chew.

At least you could of been a little bit more patient. There are a lot of people that are more than willing to help you if you needed it. You just have to learn to look for answers yourself on the web and provide information to people. A little effort goes a long way.

Maybe you just were not quite ready to think for yourself... shame

Well, here's MY mandrake experiance.

I still have it installed, as a dual boot with winXP pro, but I rarely use it. IMHO, for my programing work mandrake is excellent. As an all around desktop OS it wasn't my cup of tea not because I didn't know how to use it, but that windows was simply easier to use.

I'll admit, the most fun about installing it is learning how to fix it🙂. When I first installed it with my Radeon 64DDR VIVO, there were some pretty funky display problems. How did I fix it? By playing with the xf settings. Having so much control over your hardware is awesome. However, a couple of things I really hated:

1) Slow, slow boot time. Not a huge deal, but it bothered me for some reason, even though I only boot up once daily.
2) No 4.1 support with my Santa Cruz. However, even though there was no 4.1, I WAS impressed with the sound quality.
3) I wish there was an option (and perhaps there is that I couldn't find) to automaticely mount your drives on startup.
4) Lack of any dvd movie support.
5) Lack of decently priced games, games hard to find. I'm a college kid, and once in a while I like to shoot something🙂. Now that loki is gone, I wonder how long before others go down.
6) Trying to upgrade Netscape would always kill my OS, although luckily enough (better) browsers are available
7) The GAIM sounds are homosexual.
8) Finally, my friends are retarded and would play with my comp, get into linux and then bitch they couldn't do anything

As far as free tools that are expensive to (legally) own on other OS, Linux is good, good stuff. As a desktop OS I prefer windows. To each his own, and I recommend people to at least give it a shot!🙂

4) Lack of any dvd movie support.

Didn't you try Xine? It works great for me, but for legal reasons by default it won't play encrypted DVD's. You have to look around the web for a couple rpm's that fix that little issue.

Solution 1: Dont reboot
Solution 2: Edit what starts on bootup.

I cant disagree too much here, but if you have a Windows copy of q3 you can get the linux version for the price of a download (or so Im told, I bought the linux version and never used it :Q).

6) Trying to upgrade Netscape would always kill my OS, although luckily enough (better) browsers are available

Mozilla, galeon, konqueror 🙂

7) The GAIM sounds are homosexual.

Im sure you can change them. I personally turn most of that off.

8) Finally, my friends are retarded and would play with my comp, get into linux and then bitch they couldn't do anything

Lock your door or get smarter friends 😉

MS made NT boot quick by delay loading everything, that way the disk work is spread out even after you login things are still being started. Hell in NT 4 you could try to login before the network was started...

2) No 4.1 support with my Santa Cruz. However, even though there was no 4.1, I WAS impressed with the sound quality.

If you feel motivated email the manufacturer and complain about lack of official drivers.

3) I wish there was an option (and perhaps there is that I couldn't find) to automaticely mount your drives on startup.

Depending on which drives you mean, you can put them in /etc/fstab and they'll mount at bootup.

8) Finally, my friends are retarded and would play with my comp, get into linux and then bitch they couldn't do anything

That's a good thing, they'll be less motivated to f' up your computer if they can't work it =)

To be perfectly honest with you, I didn't have much of anything starting up with it. After booting it ran like a champ, with resources wide open.

Wow, thanks, this was actually my biggest pet peeve as minor as it sounds... I had searched to see how to do the mounting, but I couldn't find anything online... thanks a ton🙂

Actually, thats the opposite way, you get the linux version and they offer the windows download for free if you have the linux version... Q3 for linux cost me $1.99, lol, but FINDING the newer games is tricky.

6) Trying to upgrade Netscape would always kill my OS, although luckily enough (better) browsers are available

Mozilla, galeon, konqueror 🙂

Bingo, before I tried it for some reason I had something against Opera, lol, but now I love it.

7) The GAIM sounds are homosexual.

again, another petty thing, but unlike the real AIM, the windows don't blink when you get a message, so you need sounds of some sort. It isn't even so much the default sounds as it is the fact it makes me keep sounds on🙁

Well, then that sounds wierd. But I dont have a linux machine right now to test anything.

I dont play computer games much so I could be very wrong.

I forgot about Opera! Its been a while since I needed it. Ive been using Mozilla a lot lately and its great. I use Opera on OpenBSD because Mozilla is broken there. Ill consider using it on my iBook when their Mac OS X port is a little more mature (the speed would be nice).

7) The GAIM sounds are homosexual.

Virtual desktops with a dock(?) that updates when something happens on the other screens. Not a perfect solution, but might be helpful.

2) No 4.1 support with my Santa Cruz. However, even though there was no 4.1, I WAS impressed with the sound quality.
Yeah, the people who made the sound card wont release any information on how to create drivers for it...so your kinda screwed there...id reccomend e-mailing them and complaining though.

4) Lack of any dvd movie support.
Theres quite a bit of dvd support under linux actually, Xine with the Dvdnav plugin is awesome, menus, 5.1 surround and all. Ogle is another dvd player with menu support. Mplayer doesnt support menus but it plays back dvds great. Cyberlink is creating a version of PowerDVD for linux too, I'm not sure if or when its going to be released though. They all are capable of playing encrypted dvds too, you just need to download an extra file due to lame legality issues.

My gaim windows instead of blinking like AIM for windows pop up whenever somone sends a message, its kinda annoying sometimes but it works.
