hey guys, i just d/ed all 2.53GB of the raw tree (which is available to the public)

i was thinking that i could just burn it to a dvd, but wouldn't i have to make it bootable? can i just use whatever bootable files i find (you know, boot.bin or whatever) or should they be specific, or do i need 'em at all?

You *might* be able to just use one of the boot images within the raw tree.
Heck, since you've downloaded the whole thing, leave it on your hard drive and just use the hd.img floppy to boot and install.

Even though I have the ISOs, I actually extracted the files to my hard drive and installed without burning.

As you suspect, you need more than just the files to make a proper install disc. Most importantly, you need a bootloader properly configured to give you the different boot prompt options and choose the kernel and initrd appropriately. I'm pretty sure that Mandrake, like most distros, uses Syslinux as a bootloader. You can find docs on configuring it at the Syslinux site. IIRC, the config file should be part of the tree. Also, if you're trying to make a DVD, you'd need to tweak the package lists so that installer knows that all the files are on a single disc. There are instructions out there somewhere that detail this process for Red Hat - Mandrake should be almost identical.

All in all, this would probably take you longer to work out than just waiting a couple more days for the public 9.2 release. Of course, you may be looking for a project...

as much as this is simply impatient, it still would be nice to know how to do this in te future or for whatever reason. maybe this wouldn't be immediately useful info, but somewhere down the line it may tie into other knowledge... it never hurts to learn :)

can someone who successfully installed from the raw tree post an .md5 of the Mandrake/RPMS directory? apparently i had some problem files and partway through the install last night (from HD) mandrake died and complained. i had to reinstall redhat 9.0 just to boot back into windows :/

hey, that should be some company's slogan "so easy, you can use it while you're drunk!"
