Mandrake 9.1 KDE Login Problems

I installed Mandrake 9.1 last night for the first time, and created a user during the install process. However, when KDE launches and prompts me to login, I cannot login as either root or the user I created, even though I know both passwords. Things I've tried:

1. I booted to failsafe and reset both the root and user's passwords, neither fixed the problem.

2. I booted to a command line, I CAN login as root here, and as the user.

THUS, it appears to be some problem with KDE... I am an newb to this, and do not know much beyond sudo and chmod. So can someone possibly offer any suggestions? Thanks!

There was another user who posted here with the same problem as yours, but i don't think the solution was ever found. You could try a reinstall though, just to see what would happen. This time, when the installer asks if you would like to start X when your PC first boots, answer no.

try logging into failsafe mode as root.

At the command prompt, type "kdm" (without the quotes). Then try logging in as a normal user.

In case it doesnt work, press ctrl+alt+backspace to close the login window and get back to the command prompt.

Reinstallation is a welcome choice but I think in case what I suggested works, maybe others in the future might be benefitted by it 🙂

you never know. Mandrake has a history of breaking the menu editing in kde, and I had this very problem a couple times in Suse and Mandrake.

Whilst security mode is in "higher", you cannot login as root via a console, although user>su works alright
