Mandrake 8.2 NewB

OK, i dont know a thing about linux but I want to learn and get into programming and such and my friend is using Mandrake 8.2 so thats the distro he chose for me. I installed it fine on a second hard drive but I have one problem. I think I chose to let it start in the GUI i think gnome or KDE or something like that. I didnt have any G4 drivers on disk or anything so I just chose a G3 on install and 640x480. The testing went fine during installation and finished without conflict.......Then the first time I booted up right before it went to the GUI, my monitor spits out Frequency out of range and then just displays a blank screen. I cant seem to get past this, and I am wondering how to bypass the GUI if possible? Is my only option to re-intsall?

Try a virtual console (alt F?). See if you can get a command prompt there.

EDIT: It doesnt sound like a driver issue (although the gf3 and gf4 could actually be more different than I think they are), but it sounds like a monitor setup problem. Download and install the nVidia drivers and reconfigure your XF86Config-4.

im a pretty big n00b too, but ill try and help 🙂

once linux boots, press CTRL+ALT+BKSPCE (maybe CTRL+ALT+F2 ?)

that should get you to a text login, then run

Xfree86 --config (i think thats it. or something similar. sorry 🙁)

if that doesnt get you to the config utility for X, try "man x" or "man xfree86"
that should give you info on the x config util.

i think you should be able to change the res. in there.

sorry for being to n00bish 🙁
