Mandrake 8.1 Hates Old SCSI Drives

I recently installed Mandrake 8.1 on a file server of mine -- ASUS P2B-LS motherboard with onboard Adaptec AIC-7890 SCSI controller. I have a few wide 4GB drives in there and some rather old full-height Seagate 9GB narrow drives on the controller too. Whenever I try to either create a file system or access any of the 9GB Seagates the entire machine locks up. I had Mandrake 7.2 on the exact same configuration before I put 8.1 on and it worked perfect. I even had the 9GB Seagates in a RAID-0 layout. The wide 4GB drives will work fine for me, but there is no way 8.1 will let me use the older drives. Anyone have any ideas? I may just go back to 7.2 if I have to.
