mandrake 8.1, hardware detection problem

Mandrake 8.1 detects my new nic, but when it configures it, it starts to configure it then the screen goes blank. When I ctrl alt delete to restart, it restarts, what is wrong? Is there somehwere else to add my hardware? Should I reinstall the mandrake? Thanks in advance for help.
