Mandrake 8.0 installer quick question

I'm about to re-install linux to move to reiserfs (i've only used it for a few hours anyways, nothing to lose). I have a question though: how do I set a partition to mount to a directory that's not created by default? In the past i've tried to mount hda7 to /mnt/data in the installer, but it wouldn't let me. I've never succeeded at mounting the partition after installation (in fact, last time I tried it led to severe data corruption on the partition), so how do I get the installer to set it up?

I have never had this problem. Is there a way to go out to a shell? When you create the directory does it give you a chance to put in a mount point? Does that work?
