Mandrake 8.0 Beta 3 out

Dang!

I just downloaded Beta 2 on Saturday. Haven't even had a chance to spin it on.

Thanks for the update. 🙂

I downloaded beta 3 today (thanks GetRight and segmented downloading), but I haven't burned the ISOs yet. With KDE2.1.1 and Nautilis and other goodies, this is shaping up into a very nice release.

DAMN. And I just installed Beta 2 last night.

Check this out - I work at Veritas and the group I am in are perhaps some of the biggest anti Linux people in the world, next to Microsoft.

Everytime we need to put up a server of some kind, NIS, Apache, MySQL - whatever, the first thing they do is pull up the Sun web site and finding a 50k$ box. Everytime I mention "Linux", in the interest of flexibility and saving money, they give me dirty looks.

Anyhow, I just wanted to vent. Either I write all this out or I practice my kickboxing on them. 🙂

Well, I might give linux a shot, I am downloading all the stuff in that ftp directory........

Do I need all this stuff? can I just burn it and install with no prior experience with linux 😀

nice ftp too, getting over 200KBS right now 🙂

Given that you have NO Linux experience, I doubt a beta release will be pleasant for you. You may wanna try the 7.2 release.

Whether you go with 7.2 or the 8.0 beta 3, you'll only need two ISOs (the top two on your list) and the md5sum.8.0 to make sure your downloads aren't corrupt. I guess you'll need an MD5 sum generator as well.

ugh, unlike the RedHat 7 release (if I remember correctly), you don't absolutely need the second disc. It certainly has all the development stuff (for writing code, libraries, and other not-as-essential things), there are some files one there worth the download and the prevention of future aggrevation.

having been a MS based hardware tech for many many years I am ashamed that Im an idiot with linux. However I vow this very night that will all change (or at least start in that direction) Im gonna build myself a linux box, and stop being the victim that microsoft wants me to be 😛

(this also means Ill start posting in here with really dumb questions 😛)

Wish me luck 🙂

SUOrangeman: If I remember correctly, someone told me that I don't really need the 2nd disk for RH7 too as it is filled with sources and stuff like that. But I think it should be the same for Mandrake as they follow RH quite closely IMHO.

Has anyone installed and played around with Mandrake 8.0 beta 3 yet?

RedHat puts stuff on the second disc that is not super important. For instance, the put the network stuff for IPX and emulating a Novell 3.x on server on the second disc.

I recommend downloading the second ISO and doing an expert install. That way, you can choose all the little apps you might need. It also gives you a better picture of what all Mandrake has to offer.

Installed the Caldera 3.1 and RH 7.09? last night. Also pulled the Beta on Sunday night(got luck and found it on a mirror by accident). The Caldera build looks about the same as the Previous but I really haven't played with it too hard. I have to look at the PM as it will not shut the system all the way down.

Let you know what I find out.

mandrake doesn't require the 2nd disc either, but its definitely recommended, it contains addtional applications and such.
and as jsm said, do the expert install, and choose what stuff you want.

by the way, for mandrake, i wouldn't recommend doing the server install, i did it once, and it took me a week to sort out the file permissions i needed.

i'm still on beta 1. too much school, no time to mess around, as soon as exams are over though....
beta 1 was great for hardware, the software was buggy though! still got some weird stuff going on that i don't care about....

My post from LinuxNewbie boards ...

After some problems with the beta 2 install, beta 3 went rather well. The one thing that blew my mind was that it configured both of my displays for Xinerama/dual-head fun out-of-the-box. It even gave me the option to configure each card individually, but I was so amazed to see the Xinerama option, I didn't try anything else.
(Previously, I had to tweak XFree86 config files by hand to get dual-head working with my two video cards.)

I did managed to hang lpadmin when I configured my printer for the second time; haven't messed up on the first attempt on-purpose. The other "supposed" hang occured when I went to test the dual-head config. I noticed that the second display came to life, but no graphical screen ever showed. A quick CTRL-ALT-Backspace killed the install X display and the Xinerama dual-head screen came right up. They'll prolly knock out those bugs before the final code drops. No biggie.

Aside from seeing that GNOME 1.4 announcement on the LNO front page, I don't know what else can be added to Drake 8. I really don't think that I'll install the final release unless I run into some serious problems. I should be able to grab the minor updates with MandrakeUpdate as needed.
