Mandrake 10 widescreen config?

Hi. I finally crossed the river today from XP to Mandrake 10.1, but the new land is very unfamiliar to me.

i know these questions probably have been answered somewhere else, but after a whole day of googling and searching, i'm hoping for a more specific response.

I'm trying to set up the screen resolution for my GeForce4 4200 Go (laptop graphics card). the resolutions that work proportionally in XP are 1680 x 1050 or 1280 x 800 or 1440 x 900, because this is a 17.1 " WGVA laptop widescreen. so 1280 x 1024 and other "normal" ones stretch things too wide...

so what i've tried so far is trying to configure the monitor and resolution using Mdk's configure hardware tools, and going to command line and typing "service dm stop" and then "XFdrake", and all that jazz... they both offer the same options, and I thought that what would work in windows might work here. I chose Flat Screen 1680 x 1080 for both the resolution and monitors settings, and then tried 1280 x 800, etc. but these all had some weird effect, i.e. the desktop was bigger than the screen could show, or it was smaller than the screen. what's "worked" is standard 1280 x 1024 @ 76 hz for both options, whcih is not flat screen monitor. but like i said, things get widely stretched, and it's making things hard on my eyes.

any ideas? i appreciate it.

also, because i am new to all of this... what are people's favorite "tutorials" and 'getting started" mdk sites?

i know most of the basic unix concepts and commands, but i don't know how to do anything in the context of linux... i.e. how would i make gnome my default at startup, as opposed to kde? where are the main files i need to look at to begin my own customization and configuration? how do i install other windows managers and other programs? is there any hope for me to make desktop as cool and customizable as some pics i've seen? i've got alot to learn.

thanks in advance,
jason

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING.

Also, kind of important, where is the basic volume control in mandrake? ... it's making all these beeps and boops when i scroll down or and do other things, and they're incredibly loud... thanks!

Make sure you have a backup copy of your FX86Config file (I normaly make a copy call FX86Config_old in the same directory of the original), and have a rescue disk handy befor you comit any changes.

Find out what your monitor refresh rate is (HorizSync & VertRefresh) and change the setting accordingly for optimal result.
Default colour depth change to 24bit if your graphic card can handle it.

Change the screen section at the bottom of your xconfig file with the script below and use Ctrl-Alt +/- to change screen resolution. It is also best to find out the default resolution of your LCD & change the script below to get best result.

Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x800"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x800"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x800"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050" "1440x900" "1280x800"
EndSubsection
EndSection
