Mandatory Install Needed for Hot Shots Golf and Lost Planet

This is what's wrong with the mandatory install. Sure it's fine for a title every now and then, but lets hope this doesn't pick up anymore steam. You'll actually start eating up some HDD space.

I can definitely see that getting old quickly.
So basically blu-ray's read speeds are killing it's massive amount of storage advantage. (not that it matters much anymore)

Seriously... I don't care if it's a one-time one hour installation (although the install times on the PS3 are pretty absurd, even for demos). But if it gets to the point where i have to delete games to make room for other games on my 40 GB hard drive, I'm going to be pissed. That really detracts from the "pick up and play" aspect of console gaming. I don't play my older games every week, but I like to go back and play once in a while; I don't see myself doing that if I'm forced to delete a newer game's installation and sit through a long installation just to play a game for an hour or two.

Another thing I was thinking about last night - the Blu-ray drive's speed is apparently really slow; what if in the future Sony puts a faster drive in there? That'd be a real kick in the teeth to people like me who already have a PS3. I don't care about the hard drive upgrades and all that, but changing the read speed of the drive would affect your gaming experience in a pretty substantive way.

I just don't like that it's mandatory - how about an install option? Most of the other games don't have bad loading times, so obviously Blu-Ray is fast enough.

It sounds like they are just taking a possibly easier route? Games like Resistance and Oblivion duplicated (and some times triplicated) data all over the disc to improve read speeds.

I've no idea why they would choose mandatory installs over duplicating data unless it is just easier.

If it's because the developers were not given enough time to optimize reads then it's a better trade-off than giving up framerate or other downgrades.

It's still annoying though. On a 40GB PS3 you'll only have room for 5-6 of these full installs at a time.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma has an optional install but it doesn't seem to improve anything. The DMC4 install was by far the longest I've seen. Took roughly 10-15 minutes.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts.

A one time install really isn't that bad, especially if I can walk away instead of sticking by waiting to swap disks like for the PC. However, running out of HDD space will be pretty annoying. I don't swap games that often, but this could really kill the "console experience". I can't even count the number of times I said "screw it" when I wanted to pick up an old PC game, then didn't want to sit through the half-hour install... then another half-hour looking for the patch, downloading the patch from the slowest server on the planet and finally installing it.

Maybe Sony was expecting this, which is why they include instructions on how to swap the HDD...

Not sure about upping the drive speed. Even if they could, would you want it upped? My PS3 is nearly inaudible placed about 2 feet away. If it's a choice between install and a faster read time, I'll take the install.

I have to wonder if the HSG install was a consequence of the constant patches the game was getting. For a while there, they were getting at least a patch a month.
