Mandatory drug tests for work.

So I'd like to know what types of jobs in the US institute mandatory drug tests for your job? I've heard a number of people here talk about this in the past and it's something that to me at least is very alien. Seems to me a very American thing but it's possible that it's done frequently here in Canada too and I just don't know about it, any Canadian ATOTers want to enlighten me? I can certainly understand it for certain key positions like the military and such but it seems to be common in regular every day jobs, no? Seems really draconian to me, well all the drug laws in the US seem to be 🙂

I got a job at a US iBank in London and they required it. My last place had it in their policy (Financial software company) but I was never tested.

I had to do a basic medical and it was all good on my part. The Dr said she may need a bigger wrap thing for my arms lol. I nearly p!ssed myself when she said to give her as much urine as possible LOL. She didn't watch though, which is odd. I know the drugs tests that I do for weightlifting with UK SPORT requires that a man watches me p!ss in to a bottle. There has been cases of people using a prosthetic penis and someone elses urine!

just about anytime you get hired you will have to submit to a drug test in th US, even for walmart. and it really does nothing to end drug use because it's easy to get around. the only jobs that you really have to worry about are the ones that have random testing.

I had to take a drug test before I was secured a job. Since I'm an EMT drug testing isn't much of a surprise. Haven't been random tested yet, but I'm sure it will happen at some point. Don't know about anyone else, but the last thing I'd want is some drugged out medic taking care of me, so in my field I say bring on the testing.

If you sit in-front of a computer all day then most likely you won't need one as that's what most people here on this website do.

Almost any that require the use of machinery that can harm others are forced to if they want to carry insurance on the workers. These types screen at hire and during the course of employement.

Most high clearance jobs usually screen at hire...I don't know many that have to re-up. I know some that took contracts that required it though....even though they were working through another agency.

My company does not require it, but some of my clients do. when I did work for the govt (military) it was required. When I did work for industrial clients like Coke, it was required.

plenty of companies that drug test need IT people

i work at a large regional hospital. they test when you accept the employment offer, they require yearly health checkups which im pretty sure involve another drug test.

i dont hear about random testing in IT, but nurses and such are subject to random testing. Ive been told that they dont random test for marijuana but that they test for opiates and such to make sure people arent stealing meds, not sure how true that is.

A lot of jobs want it nowadays. My current one did not require it. Wouldn't have had any issues even if they did ask for one.

Why would you think it is a job-based function and not an employer-based thing?

How would that stop people stealing the meds?😕

I work in a refinery/chem plant. I was required to take a pre-work drug screening for my current job, but no randoms in my current job. In my last job, I would get randomly tested as well. But, it is understandable because I drive around inside a refinery....

ive had to do it for 2 jobs

1st company did the mouth swab,
2nd company did a piss test, however they also hair test some people for higher level positions. Engineers just get tested when they are hired IIRC. shift workers get it like once a year on some random basis

We don't get drug tested, but we get polygraphed regularly, which is even worse, because they ask things like "Have you used drugs in the last 15 years?"

One guy even asked me if I had ever had sex with a farm animal. I wonder how many people they've busted on that question 🙄

Im in canada, vancouver. And have been testes a few times, always when hired not random tests after. All were warehouse jobs that involved operating heavy equipment such as forklifts, clamp trucks, etc.

My advice is to always assume you will be drug tested. With the economy the way it is why would anyone do anything that would potentially prevent them from getting a job?

The only time I've been drug tested was back in my early college days when I tried to get a job at Petsmart.

I have never been drug tested in my life and as far as I know neither has any one of my friends or family.

But you're in NZ and the OP specifically wanted to know about US...

As to the original question, you'll find that a lot of retail stores (especially the large chains) do it to try and weed out the people that will likely show up late/no show to work or just not work as well. Jobs that have high risk of accident or involve handling hazardous/dangerous materials will too along with random drug tests throughout the course of employment and in the event of you being involved in an accident.

You don't find it too much in the business/corporate world.
