I saw a segment on cnn about the Selective Service is testing the draft mechanisms +procedures.

Instead of drafting only for the military, how about for civic positions as well?

What do u think?

You have draft? Where are you?

A friend of mine had to go back to Germany after school finished and drive tanks for 2 years.

No, I think professionals who really want to be there will do a much higher quality job.

..lets let the homeless serve jury duty. Get's em off the street. They get to stay inside. They get paid a few bucks.

Oh yeah, good idea, I definitely want firefighters who are doing it against their will.

Absolutely not.

I don't want some random jackass working as a firefighter while someone I care about is stuck in a burning building. Real firefighters and police officers (at least all of the ones that I've ever talked with), would run in there to help with little consideration for their own safety.

Think of it this way: Do you really want ATOT members to be in control of whether you live or die?

In the USA we pride our selves on freedom. I'm going with no. For that matter I think the selective service act needs to go too. Although after seeing the gun threads there'd be some hilarious results if some people here became cops.

I served a six year enlistment in the US Navy after high school and used to think that mandatory military service was appropriate for everyone. Then I entered college and realized that people live their lives differently. Some people fit an academic life better while others better fit a hands-on, manual labor type of life.

A mandatory military service would possibly take up two years of a person's life with little academic enrichment. This would disturb many academic achievements since many concepts can be forgotten during the time of service with no exposure to those concepts. For example, much of calculus can easily be forgotten in two years time with no exposure to it. Education is expensive to obtain.

For mandatory civil service we already have jury duty. Although a restructuring of jury duty to provide a normal job for educated people is an interesting concept. It is possible that mandatory civic duty for other positions may enlarge local government structures and that would not be acceptable.

I don't support compulsion in any job. If the workforce isn't there, I consider that to be the public saying they don't support that particular position (jury, firemen, military, etc).

Mandatory service is a good thing. In S. Korea they are given a choice of military service or service as part of the police force for two years. The kids go to college for a year or so and then they have to serve. I think it gives them an appreciation of what they have and from what I've seen, serving makes them study harder after they leave mandatory service.

There is merit to an all volunteer force. An all volunteer force can add quality of the force, but some jobs (especially in the military) are pretty hard to fill. There just aren't enough volunteers. (Fighting wars on more than one front stretches the all volunteer force too thin...)

I say its a good idea to consider not only re-instituting the draft, but making some type of service mandatory.

If it's for a good cause (like a WWII and not Iraq), then I'd be fine with going into service. I wouldn't want to be in the military service of my country, but if it came down to it, I'd fight for it.

I prefer Milton Friedman's view of the military/other civil services: Volunteerism is best since people want to be there. Moral is better amount volunteer forces and they do a better job overall.

I think fighting a war that 60% of the country doesn't want to fight might have something to do with that.

This is prime for abuse. You just know some corrupt officials are going to draft you to use as cheap labor to build a "shelter" that they then conveniently sell at a profit :D

It'd be strange, I wouldn't recommend it. Being forced to do a job is never a good thing.

Are you an idiot, along with all the other people who propose this? The US is not a ****** communist nation, the government does not employ people beyond government or military purposes.

I don't see why I should be forced to go serve and die for George Bush's war.

Do you think for a minute that the sons and daugthers of politicians would be drafted in a "mandatory" service? Hell no. They keep talking about staying the course and sending in more troops, but you don't see any of them sending in their own children to fight do you?

The only way I'd support a mandatory draft is if the children of our politicians are the first to be drafted.

So you're saying you'd go die for George Bush's war if the offspring of politicians did too?
