managing multiple users on multiple partitionsin xp: PLEASE HELP!

to start off: i have spent alot of time today reading the forum archives but still not sure about this issue so here goes:
i am about to do a reinstall of my OS as it seems bloated/sluggish; i have xp pro/122bg [aka 114bg] hdd/1gb ram. current config: 1 114gb partition with 3 users/identities on this home machine.

with the reistall i was planning:
30Gb OS/progs/games partition
512MB swap file partition
rest [83gb] data partition

i read somewhere about needing to manually move "my documents" etc and configure each program to "start in" [ie store to] the data partition rather than the c😀rive.

#1 figure that i have to manually move the "my documents" for each user from C: to the data drive, but will i have to manually configure the programs [word etc] to save to the data drive for each user identity? [if so it seems like a heck of a lot of work for limited benefit!]

#2 would it be better to set my partitions from the outset with fdisk, or just create the single one and then partition it up with partition magic 8?

i would appreciate your advice on the above and any other relevant info you have on the matter.

Thanks

This is the way I have my workstation at home setup, it's really quite simple. First, don't bother making a seperate partition for the swap file, theres no advantage to doing this, leave the swap file on the C: drive. Moving each persons My Documents folder is simple, setup your users on the machine, and login as them, then on the desktop, right click the My Documents icon, and go to properties, in there you can set the target destination of the folder, simply move this to D:\ or whatever your second partition will be. You shouldn't need to do anything to the Start In section of program shortcuts. It doesnt matter wheter you use FDisk or PM, either will do the job fine.

Tdgx has answered the first part of your question.

You will not have to make settings for most applications. Well-written applications, when they go to save a file, essentailly ask the operating system, "Where's this users My Documents folder kept?" and default to that location to save. The OS takes care of answering that question properly.

magic, thanks you two! it has taken alot of the anxiety out of doing this for me know.

i think i will probably do the partitioning after install with PM8 on the grounds that i have more felxibility than doing it with fdisk - any views on this?
