Anyone used it? They are bringing it to my city and I am exited. Gigabit speeds

Karachi, Pakistan...We had 100MB mans but they apparently werent to successful...This ones on a bigger citywide scale 15million people on a MAN aint to bad

You sure can get gigabits speeds across town and throughout whatever city provided they have the proper infrastrucre/design.

They have fibre optics layed through some parts (expanding) but Im not sure what they will be using for this.

They'll run the fiber in some kind of ring throughout the city, with MAN type optical switches using this fiber (SONET). Then they'll uses these optical switches to provide service. Or they'll run fiber out to your premises and place a switch on site.

Either way, they give you a port of 10,100,1000 Mbs. You can also use it in a point-to-point application where you in essence connection two buildings at 10,100,1000 dozens of miles apart.

Here in Colorado Springs, Qwest and all the local telco folks call that last part MOE - Metro Optical Ethernet ... it's pretty neat getting LAN speeds from 30 miles away.

It would be quite a task laying Fibre optics iver 200SQ miles of Urban Land. Theyve started in the cetral zones for now and should reach me in a few weeks ...Oh atleast theyll end up doing something good while the whole city is in ruins (Bastards have dug up half the city in order to improve the infrastructure!)

hatim at the end of the day it'll amount to how well they set up the network and hardware. for e.g. look at worldcall pakistan, who has an entire fiber optic back bone, they are essentially a MAN. however local speeds tend to suck, while i have seen local speeds of 8mbit+ (actual transfer speed) why does this speed drop down to like 20-30kb/s at certain points of the day, or even for days at a go? its just bad network design, congestion on their major routing points, etc etc.

setting up a MAN that will be effective at such a large scale is not an easy task, and i have to admit i don't trust any pakistani company for doing it right and doing what needs to be done to have it be effective when they have a few thousand users under their belt.
