The mental maturity it takes for someone to do this... 17 year olds have it.

I have no problem with his right to carry the gun. (though I think it's stupid)
I have no problem with the way the police handled the situation.

Pretty much this. I'm an NRA life member and this sort of thing is asinine. The ONLY good I can take from it is at least it forces law enforcement to really know the carry laws. And to not automatically assume someone with a gun is a target.
I have no problem with the police keeping an eye on the guy. It's just common sense.

I'm a gun nut. I love guns. I think everyone should be armed. I think buying a gun should have a mandatory law like health insurance does. Buy one or pay a small fine. I am serious.

But walking around with an AR strapped to your back? You are being an attention whore. You are making us regular gun nuts look bad. I can kind of see the people who do it in groups as a sort of protest. I kind of get that. But strapping an AR to your back and walking around an airport? Fuck off.

If I ever see one of these idiots in real life, I will go off on them. People like them make it harder for people like me.

Huh. Seems like they did exactly the right thing to me. Talk to the guy to test the waters. Keep an eye on him after that. You can't expect them to treat him like he was just another guy walking around with a briefcase or something. He was likely the only civilian there at that moment with the power to kill a lot of people really quickly. That marks him as a higher priority for surveillance for any police officers in the vicinity. It's the kind of common sense policing that I wish would be applied in all situations.

Hes a fucking moron.
Legality aside,in this day and age, if you carry a gun out in public like that, you're asking for trouble.
Seriously ?? he's carrying a gun for safety in an airport where there are hundreds of cops around ??
He's doing it for attention.

Heres a thought. Lets say some lunatic was doing this. Of course its all LEGAL. then decide "what the hell" takes the gun and fire into a crowed airport. He could kill 200+ people before the police can shoot him down. Imagine the outcry from the public.
Hes a fucking moron. I don't blame the police at all for doing what they are doing.

kinda contradictory statement...
if there's hundred of cops around how is this happening? He might get a few shots off. Also how does he kill 200+ people before cops shoot him down? Most common AR mags are 30 rds. Never seen 1 with more than 100 rds. (which is what it looks like he has on his).

So you think he's going to shoot 100 rds, reload, and shoot another 100 rds all the while hundred of cops are around?

Well before moving there for several years (2008-2012), I visited my grandma in your fine city of San Diego in December of 1998. I spent a week there and actually saw a bit of snow on the north side (south of Carlsbad; no accumulation; just a few fat flakes on my shirt).

When it came time to leave, my uncle, who I had not seen since I was 4 years old in the US Virgin Islands, took me to the airport. I recently discovered that he was a huge gun nut (Yes: A gun nut living in San Diego). When we get to the place where your stuff is X-rayed on the conveyor and you pass through the wands and metal detector arches, he set down two guns, lifted his pant leg, and extracted a third. It was only then that I realized that he was making some kind of statement by bringing them. This was before 9-11 so people were allowed to accompany you to the gate and I don't think it was called a Security Checkpoint. Even so, I don't recall him accompanying me any further, probably because he couldn't take the guns through and had only done that to see how they reacted. That's probably why he was the one taking me to the airport.

I kept thinking "I didn't sign up for this!" but I proved that my Gameboy with Tetris DX worked and sailed right through. He didn't seem to have a confrontation or anything so the screeners must have handled it just fine.

I did something similar at San Diego International Airport a few years before 9/11. I was going out of town on business and my wife was dropping me off at the airport and was accompanying me to the gate. I had a carry on bag that I also use as a shooting bag and didn't realize that there was a magazine for one of my 1911's in the bag loaded with ammo. Security stopped me and I just about crapped myself when they pulled that out of my bag. I told them that I didn't realize it was in there and that I had no intention of bringing it on the plane. They didn't seem to know what to do so they just said, "well, you can't bring it past this checkpoint" so I asked them if my wife could pick it up on her way out to which they replied that was fine.

This story would be more entertaining if someone else who decided they needed to carry their gun to the airport saw this guy, assumed he was up to no good b/c he's open carrying a damn AR-15, and pulled his piece out and shot the guy that he thought was a terrorist.

Wabbitslayer, that doesn't make sense. I'd hope the second guy would have more sense.

Does anyone in here doubt that if he had been black the cops would have gunned him down without hesitation? Man, I live in the metro Atlanta area. I may have to deal with this jackass some day.

Who do think it's the faulty here? the Moron that carries the gun or the state mother F****** legislators that make possible this laws and give cover to this bullshit, carrying heavy guns at will in public places?and you see Police following people that are entitle to their rights of carrying heavy weapons, the police should go and hassle whoever gave permission to do this.
and i also agree if it was an Arabian look a like that did this, carrying a heavy gun on the airport i bet you the police would act and ask questions later.

No wonder it has happened very frequently, there has been lunatics that went to schools or public places with heavy weaponry and starts killing at random, who's fault is this?the NRA and the government.

Like this guy?

Hillsborough deputies arrested a man who spotted someone with a gun, followed him into a Walmart, and tackled him. The problem? The man with the gun had a concealed weapons permit, and the man who rushed him didn't call 911 or alert store security.

According to the sheriff's office, Michael Foster, 43, saw Clarence Daniels, 62, in the Walmart parking lot with a gun holstered under his coat.

Foster followed Daniels into the store, put him in a choke-hold and brought him to the ground, the sheriff's office said. He then started yelling that Daniels had a gun.

A struggle ensued, with Daniels yelling that he had a permit. Security detained both men until deputies arrived.

They confirmed Daniels had a permit for the gun, and arrested Foster.

He is charged with one count of battery.

Just because you have rights doesn't mean they should be flaunted. If I ever do get issued a carry permit, I will only ever carry concealed. No need to start a battle that one probably couldn't finish.

Just because it's legal doesn't make it a smart thing to do. Common sense, and all.

The biggest thing for me is that the guy is whining about being harassed. The cops didn't fucking harass him; he was questioned by them because they were doing their fucking jobs. If he didn't expect the consequences of his actions, he's a moron.

Yup, let's not point the finger at the guy doing the shooting... The responsibility rests solely with whoever commits the crime, not all the millions or normal, law-abiding citizens (and resident aliens for that matter) who enjoy exercising their rights. Why are you blaming the everyone but the actual criminals?
