A Texas man whose truck was stolen tracked it down and confronted the suspected thief, killing him in a public shootout on Thursday, police said.

The owner of the Ford truck found it at the South Park Mall in San Antonio and confronted the man who had been driving it and a woman passenger, demanding at gunpoint they get out of the vehicle, Police Chief William McManus said at a press briefing.

The owner then called the police and made the two sit on the ground beside the truck’s tire to wait, but the man pulled his gun and fired at the truck’s owner, injuring him, police said.

The truck’s owner then returned fire, killing the man in the parking lot and injuring the woman, police said.

“The bad guy is the one dead, yes,” McManus told reporters. “The driver of the stolen vehicle is deceased, shot by the owner of the stolen vehicle.”

Police said the truck owner and the woman passenger were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The woman is in critical condition, and the truck owner is in stable condition.

Give this guy a medal.. and a reward of something meaningful like no taxes for 5 years for removing criminals and their girlfriends for free.. doing tax payers a service and using his 2nd amendment rights responsibly!

Like this is a perfect case.. no innocents hurt.. criminal dead, victim gets his car back!

I think you gotta let them have this one.. it's the one in a trillion scenario and they won the lottery here..

No innocents getting hurt!

I don't think anyone of us is going to be grieving for the thief or his girlfriend if she croaks. Ofcourse the family of the thief is upset.. LOL

Better story here btw:

The "victim" could have gotten a new car from his insurance and nobody would have died. Win win all around. Now he gets to see the face of the dying man he killed when he closes his eyes at night for the rest of his life.

Do you even know that the girlfriend knew the car was stolen for sure? Has that been established or are you just assuming?

I doubt he feels any remorse

I mean, of the facts are what they are this guy did the cops job for them and didn't just go in blasting he detained the people and waited for the cops to show.

I mean, at that point I'm guessing the crook knew he was dead to rights and not being known for making good decisions decided to try and shoot his way out.

I mean yes it's shitty it went down the way it did and yes I'm sure the 100's of other people nearby didn't exactly like having their day interrupted by a gun battle, but I mean I'll cut the dude some slack on this one. It managed to balance on the razor's edge and is essentially the exception that proves the rule.

Hard to know of the guy really cares but I doubt it. If he had a way to track his truck he should have called the cops and allowed them to handle the arrest. Now he gets to wonder if he didn't do what he did for the chance to kill the thief. He gets no points from me. Death for a stolen truck IS too much.

I don't usually post here, and I don't want to stir anything up, but I do have a bit of an opinion, respectfully. I live in a pretty safe area, so hopefully I don't ever have to worry about anything like this, but if someone steals something from me, especially something expensive like a car or truck, I would go after them if I could. While shooting them wouldn't be my first choice, they are probably going to be tackled if I can manage it, and I will take back what is mine and call the police.

In this situation, it is a bit different because both men were armed, and you can't tackle someone in a truck. It is unfortunate that the suspect decided to fire on the the owner, he should have surrendered at that point.

Anyway, carry on everyone. That is all.

I don't believe the owner went after the thief with plans to shoot them, as he was trying to detain them while waiting for police.

Thing is, these days (especially in Texas) you never know who else is going to be armed. I would kind of expect criminals to be. My biggest concern if I were in those shoes would be IF shooting became necessary, who is going to be caught in crossfire? Who might be unintentionally hit, even a half mile away?

That thought in itself would lead to me calling police and letting them handle it. It isn't like the owner was defending his life on the spot as someone tried to rob him, he pursued the truck himself. Like others said, that turns it from stand-your-ground to vigilantism over material property.

Glad nobody else was hit. That was dumb luck IMHO.

I am delighted this sort of thing is literally impossible in my town.

There is no chance I would be caught by any random stray bullets from this type of stupidity.

Oh, yea, the truck could get stolen. And yea, the owner could have chased the theft down. But at that point that would be the end of it. The owner would have stayed* in their vechile and called the cops. And the cops would have ended the situation in a trained and proper manner. Which most likely would have ended in the peaceful surrender of the suspect and nobody being seriously injured.

But even if it went the other way, it still would not have been a shoot out. I have seen the Palm Springs Police designated marksmen. The whole uncontrolled spraying of bullets by two factions and wounding of the girl friend would not have happened. The situation would still have been controlled and the general public not put in danger.

*because this is the golden state of California, and going vigilante is just going to get said vigilante locked up right next to the idiot who stole vigilante's truck, exactly where he belongs

I'm anti-crime, but grand theft auto does not deserve a death sentence.
Lies.

The thief was killed for his attempt to shoot and kill the owner.
That is absolutely justifiable self defense on the owner's part.

Did he HAVE to get into that situation? No.
Did he have every right to confront the thief? Yes.
Responsibility is on the thief for escalating it to a shootout.

And you blame the victim, who is the owner.

The hell it doesn't...we're WAY too soft on crime in this country.

(this coming from someone with a lengthy felony record)

The thief wasn't killed because he stole the truck...he was killed because he shot the truck's owner who was trying to retrieve his vehicle and restrain the thief for the cops.

Well… They WERE being detained. Seems like self defense to me. The girlfriend is fucked up though… dont know how you square that.

In a country with a 2nd I dont see how this plays differently.

If you had your wits about you you’d simply slashed the tires and waited for the cops.. hindsight 2020
