I was accepted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and got my official acceptance letter in early December to start the Spring 2001 semester. I got an unofficial acceptance letter in early November and some housing information a little later.

Well, today I got a fixed credit transcript form and decided I'd finish everything off and send in everything (housing contract, orientation maybe, whatever).. and looking at the housing contract I noticed that the due date was November 22!!!!

I can't believe this, I'm nearly screwed. I have had terrible luck with College and applications (applied too late out of high school and got rejected, had to go to a local college for a year, and then missed out for Fall 2000, and FINALLy got accepted for spring 2001). I always feel stupid and irresponsible when this stuff happens to me, but most of all helpless.

I'm still set to go to Madison, but have no idea what I'm gonna do about housing. Their brochure specifically says late contracts will not be accepted. I can look into private housing, but that's gonna be a lot more expensive and there's no guarantee I'll be able to get in there this late either (I sent in my housing reservation form to Madison in October! I didn't even consider that I'd have another deadline 🙁 ).

I need drugs :disgust:
 
Well, this might get you nowhere, but you could try calling and asking why the check you mailed back in the beginnig of November still hasn't been processed. "What's that you say, my check was never rec'd?!?" And see what they'll do for you.
 
I feel your pain. Same sort of thing happened to me. Mine was for UC Santa Cruz. Finding a place to live there is next to impossible. Even a room for around $800 a month was a good find.

I actually was also accepted to the U of M-Twin Cities for Spring 2001 as well and decided I would rather go to Madison since it's the better school for my purposes.

Don't sweat. I was in the same boat as you, same situation and same school. I actually got my acceptance letter in late Nov, so I didn't have enough time to apply a dorm room. But they did get me a dorm room for me afterall, you just have to explain to them. In case you cannot get a dorm room, there are plenty of private residence halls in the campus area for a reasonable price.

Thanks, but I'm still worried since they made it very clear that late contracts will not be accepted. I will definitely call them Monday, and will also look into private housing (which I don't really want to live in since it's more expensive and further away)..

This is partially my fault, but I can't help but feel they're somewhat responsible.

Since I had only gotten unofficial acceptance in early November, and housing info on November 10th, why would I pay them a deposit and sign a housing contract without official acceptance? (which I did not get until December 3rd -- beyond their Nov. 22nd deadline).

I hope I can talk my way out of this one.. I doubt I'll get any sleep until Monday.

YESS!!!!

This afternoon at lunch I called the department of University Housing and asked to speak to someone in charge, and explained the situation. He was very understanding and agreed (without a lot of convincing even) to grant me an extension!

I should try being less passive more often...
 
Congrats on getting accepted to the UW! I'm glad they helped you out, I just came in and read this and was going to PM you some names to call for help before I got to your last post. I've still got a few contacts over there. 😉 Actually, they are really good about most things in the registrar's office, more than once I needed a little flexibility in a schedule or some help getting around a deadline or two and they always helped me.

Off-campus housing in Madison isn't too bad - there's tons of it and a lot of it is about the same cost as the dorms, just not as convenient.
 
Hehe. On campus housing freshman year is good. Meet a lot of new people. Make some good friends.
I would recommend moving off-campus sophomore year, even though I didn't do it. In the hindsight, I wish I found an apartment early on and just lived there for 3 years instead of moving from place to place.
