Sad news and a great loss, I've been watching 60 Minutes since I was 13 and have always counted Bob Simon as one of my favorites. Always thought he had a certain Kronkite quality to him. Another favorite show of mine announcing profound loss this week, wonderful.

I remember being sick at home on a school day, on the couch with my parents watching CNN coverage of him and his team mates making it out of Iraqi custody.
Before leaving for Iraq, Bob noticed a mistake with his Red Cross badge and went to get it corrected. The Saudi who had given it to him said they were in the habit of putting
Protestant on American IDs if the badge registration form had the Religion field left blank (Bob was Jewish). So he asked to have a new one printed out stating Hebrew. The guy says
OK, took a step or two away then stopped, looked back at him in a way that he said made his skin kinda crawl, then grimly asked "You sure?" Bob was surprised, then feeling a little irked (or maybe wary/fearful) by the man's demeanor decided to let it go and just leave.
Good thing he didn't get all puffed up over it and let it go. Their captors would have phoned in their Jewish prize, and Mukhabarat would have shown up same day, whisking him away in a car never to be seen or heard from again.
RIP Bob, thank you for your work. You will be missed.
