A court in Den Bosch heard how Jan van den Best caused the death of one person and injured another due to his habit of allowing his Rottweiler to steer his Mercedes while cruising on the lowland highways. His behaviour was considered somehow quainter than that of Karel Waal of Rotterdam, who was apprehended for steering his vehicle with his erect penis as a 'motoring party piece', and yet caused no fatality. "He is not so much dangerous or reckless as depraved," commented his ashamed mother Annika.

Hiroshi Kumano, having bought a knackered Renault saloon for £95 in Tauranga, drove for 500 miles with no brakes before being stopped by police in Twizel. This distance included 230 miles along a very busy State Highway and 210 miles on a 'tortuous road' with steep gradients. His swerving between lanes, steering into kerbs and verges and crunching of gears to reduce speed had him judged NZ's most irresponsible driver. However, a few dissenters suggested that only a Kiwi of supreme skill could have completed such a journey.
