Got an email attachment today for a URL shortcut. The shortcut itself is 330 BYTES. This person in his infinite wisdom decides to attach it as a self-executable zip file. This just boggles my mind. Sure, he probably doesn't understand that the zip file is larger than the shortcut itself. But why he would feel the need to zip it in the first place, in this day of 10 meg attachment Word documents... It's just laughable, and I'm not even trying to be computer-snobbish here.

This guy probably sh!ts a brick when he has to email a 50kb Excel spreadsheet. "Here, I put this onto a CDR and walked it over you so I wouldn't clog up your inbox!"

If he is using more than 800MB of space on his drive tell him to delete all partitions immediately! We can't have them overflowing intro protected areas...

The fact that he compressed a file so small implies that he's knowledgeable enough to know that file compression can at times be a good thing, but not knowledgeable enough to know when, and when not, to compress files. He also doesn't know that executable attachments are filtered by a lot of mail servers w/ anti-viral implementations.

That's the way it is with a lot of end-users, and "hardcore" techies alike. They know how to do something, so they do it all the time. They never learn to use the right tool for the right problem (e.g. Linux :D).

Alot of people don't understand file sizes. They see a file, it looks the same as any other file. Thier computer isn't heavier, the disk isn't bulging. There's no visible representation of the file size that they are used to.

This morning on the radio a person wrote in that they needed help fixing a hard-drive for a blind lady.. The DJ said

"I am not sure what kind of operating system they would need, but I am sure they would need a fast one.. Something like a Pentium4 100mhz or something should be good"

Some people are taught to just zip everything. It's much easier than trying to teach them to look at file sizes and such. I zip anything that is more than one file. That way the person has just one file to download. If I'm sending just one file, I send it "as is". File size is no issue to me.
